Applied Genomics are a south Devon based consultancy that develop and deliver DNA-based solutions for improving ecological assessments. Our environmental DNA (eDNA) analyses deliver data-driven insights for deeper due diligence and more meaningful risk intelligence for our client's environmental assessments. We have developed proprietary sampling methods which maximise the probability of eDNA capture and species detection, providing reliable and comprehensive biodiversity profiling. Our approach is cost-effective, non-invasive, rapid, scientifically robust and significantly enhances conventional methods, enabling ecological assessments with molecular accuracy.

Purpose of Role

The Molecular Intern to assist with processing of Environmental DNA samples and supporting senior laboratory staff. The successful candidate will have good laboratory skills, experience working with laboratory equipment and working to a very high standard. In particular, the candidate should be able to demonstrate a strong understanding of cleanroom protocols, excellent attention-to-detail, be able to adhere to strict QA/QC procedures and be able to work efficiently with minimal supervision.

The successful candidate will be working directly with our laboratory manager at the Brixham Environmental Laboratory, TQ5 8BA. This position will be full-time, Monday to Friday, from the beginning of April, 2019.

Duties and Responsibilities

Initial duties and responsibilities: Sample processing & ensuring laboratory spaces are kept clean.

Longer-term duties and responsibilities: Sample laboratory analyses, including qPCR, microsatellite analyses, NGS library prep and sequencing

Leading on a project: depending on demonstrated abilities

Training and Development opportunities

Working in a micro SME will provide the successful candidate with opportunities to learn and undertake a wide variety of laboratory analyses related to environmental DNA analysis.

Level of Support

The successful candidate will work directly with the laboratory manager and meet with the COO daily.

Graduates will have a degree in Biology, preferable molecular biology, or equivalent. An MSc in Molecular Biology would be advantageous.

Skills and Understanding

Strong laboratory skills with a deep understanding of DNA analytical techniques

Prior Experience

Experience in DNA & RNA isolation and purification, qPCR and HTS library preparation preferred

Behavioural Characteristics/ Personal Qualities and Attributes

Meticulous attention-to-detail, be able to adhere to strict QA/QC procedures and be able to work efficiently with minimal supervision

Other Requirements

Graduate of a UK university within the last 3 years/Student at the University of Exeter

Right to work in the UK for the duration of the internship.
