The post holder will perform established activities as a part of the project team as guided by the senior scientist to achieve the project/ team goals whilst observing established procedures and protocols. The activities may be reviewed upon completion. The post holder will be trained to achieve technical competence.

Responsible for cell biology, immunoassay laboratory-based tasks, which include sampling, testing, measuring, recording and analysing results.

You will provide all the required technical support to enable the laboratory to function effectively whilst adhering to correct procedures and health and safety guidelines. You will also benefit from one-to-one coaching and have your own mentor to provide help and advice during your time with Horizon Discovery.

Tasks typically involve:

  • Conduct laboratory experiments and projects in order to produce reliable and precise data to support scientific investigations; such tasks will include cell culture (primary cells and cell lines), cell-based assays, molecular biology and biochemistry techniques as directed by the Senior Project Manager.
  • Carrying out routine tasks accurately and following strict methodologies to carry out analyses.
  • Record all laboratory work to the agreed company and departmental standards.
  • Ensuring the laboratory is well-stocked and resourced.
  • Carrying out experiments and recording data and sometimes interpreting results to present to senior colleagues.
  • Keeping up to date with technical developments, especially those which can save time and improve reliability.
  • Following and ensuring strict safety procedures and safety checks.

Qualifications required
  • 3 A Levels (or equivalent) Grade B or above (two or which must be in a Science subject (ideally Biology) - 80 UCAS Points.
  • Five GCSEs at Grade C or above including Mathematics and English (or equivalent)
Future prospects Because of the technical experience you will gain from this role, you will gain skills which many graduates have yet to develop. If you demonstrate practical ability in addition to problem solving ability there are limitless opportunities for progression within the Life Sciences sector

Things to consider The individual will be working within a laboratory environment and must therefore adhere to site dress code procedures and personal hygiene standards during testing activities (e.g. correct use of PPE such as laboratory coats and glasses). The work pattern involves day and shift working dependent upon the needs of the business. Apprenticeship National Minimum Wage (ANMW): The National Minimum Wage for Apprentices is £3.50 per hour from 1st April 2017. This is the legal minimum pay per hour applying to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their apprenticeship. For apprentices 19 or over who have completed their first year and are continuing their apprenticeship, the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies.
