Working in a production laboratory your daily duties will revolve around the manufacture of chemicals, primarily for the flavour and fragrance industry.

Duties to include:
  • Assist in the operation of laboratory production and control equipment on a daily basis against the weekly plan
  • Operate to good standards of housekeeping at all times
  • Liaise with Team Leader to organise work to meet agreed targets
  • Under guidance by the Team Leader make sure raw material stocks are monitored and any shortfalls reported
  • Ensure all documentation is completed in a timely and legible manner to ensure production and process control records are kept up-to-date
  • Comply with all sampling and control requirements as specified in the control plan for manufacturing processes under operation
  • Ensure that all written Process Directions and Standard Operating Procedures are followed and any inconsistencies or unclear instructions are brought to the attention of the Team Leader
  • Undertake any on-the-job training as required
  • Undertake the safe operation of plant equipment and machinery at all times
  • Comply with all company procedures and legislative requirements for chemicals handling and plant operation by utilising the correct PPE and other relevant control measures
  • Be aware of relevant COSHH and Risk assessments for the activities they undertake.
  • Prevent wastage of materials and energy resources by the operation of environmentally sound working practices
  • Comply with all relevant company procedures for waste minimisation, segregation, treatment and control

Desired qualifications

  • You must possess a minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) - grades A - C including Science, maths and English
  • You must have gained a minimum of 104 UCAS points at A-level (grades; B,C,C), with one being Chemistry. Equivalent qualifications such as BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma, DDM, in a scientific discipline is also acceptable


Future prospects

  • On successful completion of the apprenticeship, candidates will be able to apply for further positions for the right candidate


Things to consider

The apprentice must be able to demonstrate the required attitudes, behaviours and interpersonal skills associated with the professional workplace.

Although 20% of working hours will be allocated to study time, the apprentice must be willing to commit a significant amount of personal time to study.
