The role will include many differing responsibilities and these will change over the course of the apprenticeship which we envisage will last 3 to 4 years.

Initially, responsibilities will include administrative tasks (answering the phones, taking messages, opening and dealing with the post, taking the post to the post office at the end of the day, scanning) in addition to accounting and bookkeeping tasks.

The latter will include posting purchase invoices to client's bookkeeping software (xero or sage), reconciling bank accounts, preparing VAT returns, posting payroll journals, setting up payments. Accounting tasks will be assisting more senior members of the team in putting together a set of year end accounts, e.g. updating working papers, posting client's trial balance to our internal accounting package, summarising bank statements, drafting the accounts.

In the second and third years, responsibilities will become more complex.

For example, supervising new apprentices in carrying out the 'year 1' tasks, producing management accounts including making month end adjustments, visiting clients to assist with their bookkeeping, carrying out more complex reconciliations such as month end factoring account reconciliation, preparing year end accounts from beginning to end.

We would also expect our apprentices in years 2 and 3 to be the first point of call for new apprentices in terms of training and supervision - we find this is one of the best ways for trainee accountants to consolidate their knowledge.
