What you’ll be doing

You might think that going to the office is a very normal thing to do. But have you ever wondered what makes that office a safe place to work? Who makes sure the building complies with the right laws and regulations, takes care of health and safety and controls who can come in and out? Well, at BT that’s our Operational Security team.

As an Operational Security Apprentice, you’ll work with your local site manager to make you understand the threats and issues that face us on a local and global basis; and how to keep our staff safe. You’ll work closely with our front desk to manage visitors– after all it’s key to know who is in our buildings. On top this, you’ll also gain a complete understanding of health and safety regulations, learn how to minimise risks and deal with hazards to well-being. Part of your role will also make sure all the relative security policies and information are communicated to everyone that needs to know. And you’ll work with our teams to be prepared for any audits of our security processes and procedures.

On top of making sure everything is in tip top shape on a day-to-day basis, you’ll also be a member of our Incident Management Triage team. That means if something does go wrong (hopefully not!), you’ll be part of the team responsible for mitigating the threat and getting everything back to normal.

In this role, you’ll need to be self-managing, well organised and calm under pressure; you never know what the day will bring. Great people and customer-facing communication skills will also help you thrive in your career in operation security.

Because of the nature of the work we do, this role may require security clearance. Don’t worry, a member of the Early Careers Team will talk you through this.

This job is available in the Global part of our business.

About the apprenticeship you’ll study for

As an Operational Security Apprentice, you’ll study for a Level 3 apprenticeship called Security First Line Manager.

  • The course runs for 18 months
  • You’ll spend a minimum of 20% of your time learning and studying.
