Structural Engineering Higher Apprenticeship - 2017 start
An application for our Structural Engineering scheme could see you assigned to a role in one of two exciting departments in the business; Metallurgy (Materials Technology) or Production Engineering (PED).
Metallurgy (Materials Technology)
About the Department
The Materials Technology department provides a specialist engineering consultancy and testing capability on marine materials, covering metallurgy, welding engineering, non-metallic materials and paint technology. The department is actively involved in all stages of the product; covering design, manufacture, commissioning, and support to in-service operation.
The department also conducts an active research programme to evaluate global developments in materials and joining technology, and is involved in a variety of work to support other BAE Systems business units.
About the role
Over the 5 year scheme Higher Apprentices complete 3-6 month placements developing an understanding of metallurgy, welding engineering and materials science, gaining experience in the conduct and reporting of metallurgical advice, investigations and research, the qualification of weld procedures and the assessment of non-metallic materials.
The role provides an insight into all aspects of the submarine lifecycle, and includes placements with key associated departments, including Structures and Nuclear Engineering.
Production Engineering (PED)
About the Department
The Production Engineering Department (PED) is a specialist engineering team containing both designers and engineers who combine to support the processes and techniques for the fabricating and outfitting of ships and submarines.
We provide a varied and flexible service through the life of the product by supporting the Build Strategy, Engineering Design, Manufacture and Operational activities plus improvements to Production processes and facilities. We are responsible for many of the significant activities to support the build i.e. the Transport, Handling and Shipping of large modules & units, we also design and analyse the many Jigs and structural platforms.
About the role
Through-out this 5 year scheme you will complete 3-6month placements to will gain an overall understanding of the design and build of the product and the tools required to support the build. As a PED Engineer you will learn to understand and utilise a wide range of skills and Standards as you will be involved from concept design through to final use.
The role will offer the successful candidate the opportunity to understand what is required to become a competent engineer with exposure to the design, build and manufacture of a wide range of products while ensuring the safety, quality, cost and structural integrity of the components are not compromised. The role will include a number of placements in other related departments or functions with all the appropriate training and guidance required to support your development
What you’ll need
To apply for the Structural Engineering HA Scheme, you’ll require 3 A-levels grade A*-C (or equivalent), including Maths and a science related subject (excluding General Studies).
All applicants will be expected to be medically fit as deemed necessary to perform the role, be eligible to work in the UK and be able to successfully achieve security clearance. The focus of the Structural Engineering HA Scheme is on the development of the individual. You will be fully funded by the company to achieve a relevant level 4 qualification, followed by a full honours degree.
You’ll also have the opportunity to learn from colleagues who are experts in their field, and gain insights that can only come from real world experience. You will also be expected to take part in ‘Stretch Assignments’ these are opportunities to be involved in a variety of charitable and promotional projects to develop skills in addition to those that can be learned through college\placements.

The selection process is made up of four stages:

- Assessment Centre including; Competency Interview, Presentation and Group Exercise
