Job summary

Under supervision to assist team members to undertake decontamination duties in all areas of the re-processing of Medical Devices by the receipt, wash assembly, pack, sterilisation, delivery and tracking and tracing process in accordance with policies & procedures, to both internal and external customers, providing a safe product for use in direct patient care. The complexity of the work is such that all staff are expected to apply themselves fully to the task in hand, so that mistakes are minimised, patient safety is not compromised and customer requirements are met in the agreed turnaround times.

As this role is an Apprenticeship there is an expectation that the successful candidate will undertake extensive training as an Apprentice Technician to the accepted standards.

This role offers you the chance to develop skills, knowledge and experience in this area of expertise and you will be expected to attend all college study days (or undertake distance learning) with the agreed training provider organisation. This will also include regular meetings and reviews with your Training Officer. As a responsible employer and as required by Apprenticeship rules we will ensure that you have 20% 'off the job' training as specified in all Apprenticeship qualifications.

Upon completion of the full Apprenticeship and having met the expected standards of all employees within Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust there is the expectation that you will be offered a fully banded (Band 2) permanent role as a HSDU Technician within the HSDU Department.

The HSDU is responsible for providing a decontamination service within Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust and other specialist users outside the organization as in accordance with the UKCA Medical Device Directive

Job responsibilities

To be a committed learner who shows initiative in training to be a sterile services technician, completing both practical and theoretical competencies.
  • To work as part of a team and liaise with other apprentices, technicians, supervisors and managers. Receive training instruction and advice from mentor/line manager
  • Conduct working relationships in a manner that reflects a service orientated department and respects Trust values.
  • To refer appropriate issues and raise uncertainties with senior staff
  • Good interpersonal skills when dealing with customers from other departments both inside the Trust and the Community Services and other agencies.
  • To communicate with members of the public and patients.
  • Plan and prioritise your own workload under supervision and work with minimal managerial direction once fully trained.
  • To achieve and demonstrate agreed standards of personal and professional development within defined timescales
  • To participate in all areas of the re-processing of Medical Devices by the receipt, wash assembly, pack, sterilisation & delivery process in accordance with policies & procedures, to both internal and external customers, providing a safe product for use in direct patient care.   • Ensure Health & Safety of self and others in accordance to policy
  • To contribute to the safe, effective, and efficient delivery of the service and follow current and best practice
  • Ensure that current Standard Operating Procedures are followed.
  • To undertake training as in accordance with the departments training programme and undertake training in line with the Institute of Decontamination of Sciences Educational Framework as agreed with the line manager
  • Ensure mandatory training is up to date.
  • Adhere to all Trust/Departmental Policies and Procedures.
  • Ensure daily routine testing of decontamination equipment is carried out as in accordance with the departments standard operating procedures and report any malfunctions to a senior member of the team.
  • To work efficiently and effectively, staff are expected to apply themselves fully to the task in hand so that mistakes are minimised.
  • Carry out stock rotation on a daily basis and request raw materials as in accordance with the levels of activity to minimise wastage.
  • To develop and maintain a portfolio of evidence of training
  • Use the departments tracking and traceability system for all reprocessed equipment through the departments in-house training programme.
  • Report any discrepancies using the appropriate paperwork in a timely manner.
  • Record/report all incidents on the appropriate Trust forms.
  • Answer telephone requests/complaints and document on the appropriate forms.
  • Check deliveries of stock and inform a member of the management team of any shortfalls.
  • Carry out mandatory training on-line on the organizations electronic training facility.
