What will the apprentice be doing?

At the end of the apprenticeship you will utilising the following occupationalknowledgeandskillsin your role at Cyclife:

Working competently in a technical nuclear environment, understand and promote personal responsibility for Health, Safety, Radiation Protection, Environmental Protection, Quality, Security, Safeguards and principles of Risk Management.
Analysing engineering and scientific problems
Developing and critically applying knowledge of the concepts, principles and theories of engineering science relevant to the interdisciplinary fields of nuclear technology.
Demonstrating an understanding of stakeholder requirements, commercial awareness, business improvement, project and business management techniques relevant to the nuclear industry.
Applying your science or engineering discipline knowledge to the development, operation, maintenance and progression of technologies used for Decommissioning (e.g. remote handling and robotics), Waste Management, Reprocessing, and Nuclear Power Generation.
Specifying, planning, managing, conducting and reporting on nuclear projects
Synthesising information from a variety of sources and apply to the solution of a particular nuclear technology application.
Accurately observing, recording and drawing conclusions from data and experimental evidence, recognising inherent uncertainties and limitations.
Applying design processes including materials selection that meet nuclear industry standards.
Demonstrating an understanding of Regulatory requirements both national and international.
Developing technical reports that meet requirements of the prevailing verification process.
Demonstrating knowledge of the nuclear industry (past, present and future) and the business, political and community environment in which the company operates including personal role within the organisation, ethical practice and codes of conduct.
Demonstrating an understanding of root cause analysis and learning from experience (LFE) processes.
Demonstrating knowledge of the technology, safety, environmental and economics of nuclear fuels and the nuclear fuel cycle.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

This apprenticeship is delivered in line with Apprenticeship Standard ST0289 - Nuclear Scientist and Nuclear Engineer (Integrated Degree) and will be delivered at Lakes College, West Cumbria, in conjunction with the University of Cumbria.

The Honours Degree in Science provides a higher education scientific experience for the student in decommissioning & waste management. The course has been designed
to provide a combination of extensive practical work supported by academic studies with a unique experience within the National College for Nuclear Northern Hub. The aim of the programme is to provide work ready scientists with the relevant skills, knowledge and behaviours to work within a highly technical environment.

During the honours degree you will study on one of three pathways with topic areas which will include:
  • Professional Development
  • Radioactive Waste Storage & Environmental Impact
  • Radiological Measurement & Laboratory
  • Project Management in Nuclear
  • Robot Systems, Configuration & Programming

The course will be delivered on a block release basis providing opportunities for students to undertake individual modules supporting continuous professional
development. A range of delivery methods will be utilised during studies with a large emphasis on 'learning from doing'. This will include the use of a virtual realty suite enabling the students to experience industrial systems and situations within a safe environment. In addition the students will have the opportunity to work within the brand new National College for Nuclear Northern Hub, with state of the art equipment preparing for real work experiences and real industrial scenarios. A large proportion of the student activity will be with project work.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

Upon successful completion of this apprenticeship, you will be eligible to apply for:
  • Professional registration as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng) or Registered Scientist (RSci)
  • Membership of a Professional Institute
