About the apprenticeship

Duties

Here's an overview of the main duties of the post:
• Support the team in providing technical support to others
• Give input to new ideas and identify efficiency savings by identifying how the Service can create improvements, improve customer care or create new opportunities
• Play a role in decision-making to ensure that elements of projects are completed on time, within the budget and to the expected standards
• Manage workload to meet targets
• Give input into the decision making process in selecting and selecting new suppliers and products
• Give input into the development of new policies and procedure
• Give input into the business planning process
• Contribute towards ensuring that performance targets and improvement measures are met, or exceeded
• Use effective communication skills to discuss IT issues with users of all levels across the Council
• Develop clear and understandable specifications for projects
• Represent the Service at meetings across the Council and externally from time to time
• Use problem solving skills to ensure innovative solutions are used

The Digital Degree (Software Engineering) apprenticeship provides apprentices with the knowledge, skills and competencies needed to become professionally qualified software engineering workers.

The apprenticeship provides a good foundation for an individual to learn about the field. In addition, the program provides the tools that enable our apprentices to be at the forefront of a rapidly changing field.

Qualifications

Qualified to level 3 (at least) meeting the requirements below:

Either:
• 3 A levels at grade C or above
• Level 3 vocational equivalent (eg BTEC Level 3 National Diploma, Merit or above)
Please note any combination of qualifications with an equivalent degree will be acceptable.

Who can apply?

To be eligible to apply you:

  • will be at least 16 years of age at the time of making your application
  • will not be in full-time education (you can apply while still attending school/college/university but will have finished or intend to finish your studies by the time your apprenticeship starts)
  • will need to meet the Civil Service Nationality requirements to apply.

ALS eligibility

Please note that ALS our training providers have their own eligibility in order to provide the funding required to undertake an apprenticeship. You may not be eligible to apply if:

  • you already hold a qualification at Level 3 or above in ICT, Software, Web and Telecoms or a similar subject
  • you already hold a qualification at Level 3 or above in Business Administration, Customer Service or a similar subject

What are the benefits?  

How much will I be paid?

You will earn £19,240 a year while training. When you pass your apprenticeship you can apply for a permanent job at the Welsh Government. Within 2 years of starting your apprenticeship you could be earning £22,500. 

You will get 31 days holidays as well as 10 public and privilege days. We offer flexible working arrangements to help you get the right work/life balance. You will also be eligible for membership of the Civil Service Pension Scheme
