Job summary

Occupational therapists play a critical role in providing practical care and supporting recovery for those who struggle performing day-to-day tasks. Their role is powerful in using everyday activities to enable people to live independently, enjoy a good quality of life and reach their potential.

Your apprenticeship in BSc (Hons) Applied Occupational Therapy Degree (Level 6) will enable you to register with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) which is required to practice as a registered occupational therapist

Scheduled learning is delivered through online or face-to-face teaching, which comprises a minimum of 20% off the job training throughout the programme. This includes methods such as lectures, seminars, group work projects, workshops and tutorials.

1st year pay at 65% on top of band 4

2nd year pay at 70% on top of band 4

3rd year pay at 75% on top of Band 4

4th Year pay at 75% of £23,650.50

Main duties of the job

The course consists of work-based learning within the workplace. While working full-time, you will build a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate your skills and competencies. Apprentices will also undertake three blocks of placement learning, where you will complete 1000 hours of assessed placement activity, in a clinical setting outside of their workplace.Assessment takes the form of a mix of module assessments including a written exam, essays, presentations, and oral examinations. The apprenticeship will then be concluded by an end point assessment supported by the portfolio of evidence collated over the four years.Over the four-year apprenticeship, you will study a range of subject areas, from the human body to promoting healthy living.o Year one modules focus on understanding occupation as a concept, providing an introduction to occupational science. This includes the relationship between occupation, health and wellbeing, as well as fundamentals of psychology, sociology, anatomy and physiology.o Year two modules build on this foundation by developing understanding of challenges to occupational engagement. This includes professional reasoning and evidence-based practice.o Year three modules develop professional skills further by including, complex needs, psychosocial challenges and promoting healthy futures.o In the final year, you will apply their skills, knowledge and experience to complete a research dissertation, and your evidence-based portfolio in readiness

Job responsibilities

Apprentice Occupational Therapist:

- To study and gain formal qualification in The BSc Occupational Therapy Training Programme- The post holder will carry out work-based learning in the department under the supervision of a workplace supervisor whilst also attending academic sessions as planned- To deliver therapeutic interventions, using the principles of Physiotherapy/Occupational Therapy in an integrated and client-centred way supported by the Therapy Competency Framework- To take on increasing responsibility for personal development and supporting the development and supervision of others by CPD (continuing professional development)- To use clinical reasoning skills and techniques to assess, diagnose, plan and offer a range of treatment options; deliver, evaluate and amend the treatment plan. This will include patients with diverse or complex presentations/multi-pathologies in individual or group therapy sessions- To work as an autonomous practitioner with access to guidance from specialist therapists when necessary, including working as a lone practitioner in the community- To be responsible for the organisation of own caseload and appropriately delegate to support workers or other staff members in order to ensure effective time management- To assist the team in the day to day running of the clinical area- To communicate with the multi-disciplinary team (MDT) to aid effective patient care, which will include taking an active role in team meetings, joint treatment sessions, case conferences and specialist interest group meetings-To work as part of the multi-disciplinary team, to make recommendations for appropriate and timely discharge/transfer from hospital- To consolidate and learn new skills and competencies to provide holistic care using the Therapy Competency Framework- To develop clinical reasoning and treatment techniques through the active participation in training and development- To consolidate knowledge and skills learned through this process with the direction of senior staff, and deliver research based presentations as part of in-service training. This will involve facilitating own learning opportunities, reflecting on practice and learning through this process- To participate in the supervision, caseload monitoring and clinical education of support workers, progressing to supervising undergraduates and less experienced staff with support of senior staff, as required- To Provide support, guidance, training, and assessing and evaluating competence, in order to fulfil clinical governance requirements and retain a skilled workforceTo progress to participating in the undergraduate education process, as a clinical educator for undergraduates from the University of the West of England. This involves the assessment of students competency to practice and contributes to their BSc honours award- To maintain clear, accurate and concise patient records in line with departmental and professional standards and include relevant outcome measures. This will include writing patient reports for e.g. medical practitioners and solicitors requests- To work with senior staff undertaking audit and research projects, to further own and teams clinical practice within each rotation- To be involved in making recommendations for changes to practice and procedures for the relevant clinical area, and the implementation of these changes- To contribute to the Clinical Governance and Quality agenda by active participation in service initiatives, health and safety and risk management- To participate in the out of hours service at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital and/or Cheltenham General Hospital after appropriate induction and training as required*- To comply with Trust and Departmental policies and procedures e.g. Health and Safety at Work Act (1974), Manual Handling clinical equipment competency, risk management, Data Protection Acts and patient confidentiality at all times. This will include demonstrating compliance with the terms of all safeguarding policies and processes relevant to the safeguarding of adults and children in the care of GHNHSFT and to undergo regular mandatory training concerned with safeguarding matters

Essential

  • GCSE: Grade C (4) or above in English Language, Mathematics and Double Science
  • A-level (128 tariff points): Evidence of recent* successful level 3 (A Level equivalent) study (* last 3 years). If applicant has a previous degree but no recent study- this will be considered on a case-by-case basis
