What will the apprentice be doing?

Here at Ashgates we can provide you with a broad range of experience and exposure to all aspects of accounting, audit, business services, tax and corporate finance.

Tax Apprentice.

The position will involve the following areas of responsibility:

Under supervision and with guidance from the Tax Managers, for allocated clients:

Own allocated client work,
  • Prepare Personal and Corporation Tax Returns, including preparation of tax computations and draft own correspondence to client.
  • Calculate tax liabilities and payments on account and to advise the client how and when these become payable.
  • Check computations of liabilities produced by HM Revenue & Customs.
  • Raise queries directly with HM Revenue & Customs and resolve these, and to answer any enquiries from HMRC as required.
  • Liaise with FGIFS, the audit and business services and payroll departments to resolve any queries regarding client Tax Returns. Prepare P11D forms.
  • Prepare budgets in respect of time costs for each Tax Return and agree with the appropriate manager.
  • Prepare bills for allocated clients, agreeing the level of fee with the tax manager/partner.
  • Justify any discrepancies from budgeted time to own manager, and to make recommendations re adjustment of fees.
  • Keep database up to date on all allocated clients.
  • As part of the tax team to achieve turnaround and other deadlines.

Practice development.
  • Within scope of own expertise, to alert the Tax Manager of any opportunities for selling Ashgates' services further Identify possible areas for additional tax savings for clients and liaise with the relevant manager/partner in this regard.
  • Keep up to date with current tax legislation by reading, attending seminars and courses etc. and to alert the tax staff and partners of any new cases, law or technical points that may be relevant or lead to further tax services/advice.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

ATT Level 4

The ATT syllabus follows a modular structure, which consists of two core certificate papers and four optional certificate papers, allowing you to specialise in your own area of interest or expertise.

Core papers:
  • Personal Taxation.
  • Business Taxation.

Optional Papers:
  • Business Compliance.
  • Corporation Taxation.
  • Inheritance Tax,
  • Trusts & Estates.
  • Value Added Tax.

Computer-based exams
  • Law.
  • Professional Responsibilities and Ethics.
  • Accounting.

The Knowledge areas of the standard will typically be covered through completion of the qualification. Skills and Behaviours are developed through workshops, e-learning, workplace training and practical experience provided 'on-the-job'.
