Your future plans
Climate change is one of the biggest environmental challenges all around the globe and is likely to make severe weather events more extreme, frequent and costly. At RWE the requirement for more accurate analysis into this topic is increasing as we try to understand how these events will change over time and will impact global power markets, particularly as we see a transition towards increased renewable energy production i.e. wind, solar and hydro.

Our meteorological team is now looking for a new team member who supports to analyse and assess the risk of future weather patterns on the demand and supply of power across various global power markets and across various parts of the business i.e. Corporate strategy, European gas, Continental Power, coal and Asian-Pacific.

If you re interested in a 6 month internship or if you re looking for an interesting topic for your master thesis, have a look at the following responsibilities and reach out to us:

Review latest publications on climate change and its consequences for different regions (e.g. IPCC report)
Build up trustful relationship with research institutes to establish a collaboration between the Weather Analysis desk and respective scientific groups
Quantify the effect of climate change for temperature, precipitation, wind and radiation on a broad regional scale for future price modelling
Analyse, how climate change could modify the characteristics of weather (e.g. changes in the frequency of extreme conditions)
Evaluate recent publication, on how adaptation could also lead to a diversification of human behaviour resp. a modification in gas / power demand
Interpret and communicate the results of analysis to various parts of the business, e.g. members of the meteorological team or other analysts in the company

Your powerful skills

Studies in meteorology, climate science or atmospheric science
Experience in working with climate models (such as IPCC, ECHAM, UKCP18) and analysis of their output
Strong analytical and communication skills (in both, writing and speaking)
Experience in literature research and the ability to summarize complex correlation in an easy way
Curiosity and motivation to learn, how weather impacts energy based commodities
Language skills: fluent in English
Programming skills in R or Python

Advantageous, but not a must

Further language skills (e.g. German, French, Italian)
Experience with large datasets are useful
