What will the apprentice be doing?

A Digital & Technology Solutions Professional provides technology enabled solutions to internal &/or external customers, in a range of areas including software, business & systems analysis, cyber security, data analysis & network infrastructure. They implement technology solutions that enable businesses to develop new products & services & to increase an organisations productivity using digital technologies. The primary role of an Application Specialist is to be able to design, build & test high-quality software solutions. They will typically be working as part of a larger collaborative team & will have responsibility for significant elements of software projects. This role is important in the smooth running of the Team/Service & will need to be adaptable & flexible to respond quickly & effectively to changing priorities.

You will join a busy team initially providing support for the end users of our social care system & using the various support tools to achieve this, e.g., call logging system, Wiki etc. You will learn to work within a team to provide a professional & proactive support service, ensuring that all matters are dealt with in a confidential, professional, prompt, & efficient way.

As well as supporting you to gain professional analysis qualifications such as Agile & Lean 6 Sigma, your on-the-job experience will ensure you develop your IT & customer service skills alongside your studies. You will progress to working in a Change Management team alongside established Business Analysts, where you will support change process from submission of a request right through to the implementation of the change & all the steps in between such as requirements gathering, IT & Business specifications & user acceptance testing. This could be the scale of a small change in a form to full blown business process reengineering, reimagining existing processes & redesigning them to achieve extraordinary results.

EXPERIENCE: It is essential that the post holder has:
  • Considerable experience of solving problems or maximising opportunities, gained through work, work experience or study.
  • Considerable experience of how to discover hidden requirements using probing techniques to establish trust, using open & closed questions effectively, & avoiding leading questions, gained through work, work experience or study.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: It is essential that the post holder has:
  • Detailed knowledge of how to operate at all stages of the software development lifecycle, gained through work, work experience or study.
  • Working knowledge of how teams work effectively to develop software solutions embracing agile & other development approaches, gained through work, work experience or study.
  • Understand how to apply software analysis & design approaches.
  • Understand how to interpret & implement a design, compliant with functional, non-functional & security requirements.
  • Understand how to perform functional & unit testing.
  • Understand how to use & apply the range of software tools used in Software engineering.
  • How to present recommendations & influence action.
  • Understand how frame/define business problems objectively before solving them.
  • Ability to plan & organise work to produce a high level of output to quality standards.
  • Ability to learn to communicate with people at all levels, internally & externally, confidently, sensitively & diplomatically.
  • Ability to deal with tasks confidentially.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?
  • You will gain a BSc (Hons) in Digital & Technology Solutions at the end.
  • Training will be based at County Hall, Spetchley Road, Worcester, WR5 2NP
  • Training will be one day a week.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

There will also be opportunities in the latter year to work alongside the team managers to gain a more strategic understanding & skill base across all areas of IT Service Delivery. If you are considering a career in IT customer service, this will be your first step in developing all the skills & behaviours to make you a great Application Analyst. Prior IT experience is not required, just an enthusiasm for designing our services around the needs of the customer & putting them at the heart of all we do.

Once the successful applicant has finished their apprenticeship, they will have theopportunity to progress onto a possible permanent job role within the company.
