Our Garden Apprentices

In the role of Apprentice Gardener you will work alongside and learn from The Newt s horticulturists and take an active role in the care and development of the horticultural collections including working in the main Visitor Attraction Gardens, Woodlands, Plant Records, wider estate and the Nursery. The apprenticeship will give you the opportunity to be involved and assist with various Horticultural tasks:
The day to day cultivation and maintenance of the garden, conservatory and nursery
Interacting and engaging with visitors and colleagues from other areas of the Estate to provide guidance, impart knowledge and promote and enhance The Newt s reputation as a leading garden attraction
Be involved in assisting with preparation and delivery of horticultural talks and demonstrations for visitors and colleagues
Actively learn and develop your skills and knowledge through The Newt s horticulturists and attending Kingston Maurwood College to achieve your Level 2 - Horticulture Operative Qualification.

Key Responsibilities:

Assist with a range of horticultural tasks in the day to day cultivation and maintenance of the garden, conservatory, nursery and plant records on rotation with specified horticulture teams as part of your learning and development. You will work in a team environment and individually to a standard agreed with the Line Manager
Participation and attendance in the practical training programme in the gardens, with assessment of the Level 2 work based qualification
Compliance with all Health & Safety regulations and procedures.
Attend and complete equipment and machinery training as required to ensure safe operation in line with company guidelines • Actively engage and interact with visitors and colleagues answering questions, providing guidance and imparting knowledge to promote and enhance The Newt s reputation as a leading garden attraction
Actively promote the work of horticulture within other areas of the Estate, thereby developing and maintaining the culture of collaboration and co-operation across all the Estate Departments and functions
Be involved and assist in the preparation and delivery of horticultural talks and demonstrations to visitors, colleagues, local officials and external bodies as directed
Actively participate in professional societies and other organisations to disseminate and share ideas assisting you to keep current on industry developments with aim to constantly monitor and improve cultivational practices and strive for Horticultural excellence

Skills and Experience

An intermediate level of IT skill, e.g. Emails, web browsing and Microsoft Word
The ability to grasp information and apply recently gained knowledge
With guidance, organise daily work plans
Have effective communication skills, both written and verbal
Ability to collaborate with colleagues and senior staff
Be willing to try new areas of work

Demonstrate a willingness to listen and learn
Supportive and effective team player and helpful to colleagues
Be friendly, polite, approachable and helpful to visitors at all times
Ability to grasp information and apply recently gained knowledge
Be willing to carry out physical work in relatively confined spaces and in hot, cold and inclement weather.
