What will the apprentice be doing?

Principal accountabilities/Main tasks:
  • Carries out the routine chemical and physical testing requirements of the Lyocell Process as specified in departmental procedures and at the prescribed frequency.
  • Records and archives test data generated and highlights any problems or unusual variations, and reports out of specification results to the relevant people.
  • Is involved in new test method development & assists with the investigation of customer complaints.
  • Ensures where possible "Work Requests" are carried out as required.
  • Ensures other people see the Laboratory as helpful and professional.
  • Develops and continuously reviews new and existing Laboratory procedures.
  • Ensures the Laboratory is a safe place to work in or visit, and that high housekeeping standards are maintained.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

All successful graduates are awarded a BSc (Hons) Chemical Science degree from Manchester Metropolitan University, as well as aLevel6degreeapprenticeship.

The course is primarily taught through tutor-supported online study, part-time over four years. Apprentices will attend a two-day induction at the University to help them get to know each other and balance undergraduate study with working full-time. They will also attend a week-long residential at our campus in central Manchester once a year,in addition to a two-day mini-residential in the firstyear.

They will complete projects in their workplace, tackling challenges relevant to their employer and applying their learning directly to their organisation and its business context. A University coachand a workplace supervisor undertake regular progress reviews and support apprentices in their work andstudies.

They will be based at the Lenzing Group site in Grimsby, Address: Energy Park Way, Healing, Grimsby, DN31 2TT

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

Qualification improves career progression in a wide range of industries, including the chemical, pharmaceutical, materials, food and drink, utility, healthcare, aerospace and automotive sectors. A strong professional and practical focus helps apprentices move into roles such as technologist, laboratory analyst and process operations manager. Graduates can apply to become a Registered Scientist (RSci), a professional qualification recognised by the Royal Society ofChemistry
