About the apprenticeship


• Assist in the front line operational maintenance of the trunk road from small pothole repairs to major resurfacing of the carriageway.
• Gain an understanding of the broad range of statutory duties and highway standards that the Agency work to on behalf of Welsh Government.
• Assist with the monitoring and management of temporary works such as traffic management on the highway.
• Learn how to manage safety risks on the trunk road network.
• Work closely with the Environmental Team to see how we aim to maintain and improve biodiversity alongside the trunk road.
• Take part in the project management of small engineering works in conjunction with our local authority and private sector supply chains.
• Work with colleagues in the Technology Unit who provide design, maintenance and improvement management for technology infrastructure systems e.g. roadside electronic signs.
• Work closely with the Traffic Officer Service helping to manage live incidents on the A55 / A494 / A483 dual carriageways.
• Take part in meetings for example with the Traffic Wales Service.
• Work closely with specialist colleagues dealing with Third Party Claims, finances, street works management and health & safety.



All apprentices will be expected to demonstrate:

- Communicating with confidence
- Commitment to learning
- Understand what is required to work for the council / agency


Qualified to at least Level 2 meeting the following requirements:
• 4 GCSEs grade D or above
• Corresponding Level 2 vocational qualification (e.g. BTEC First Level 2 Diploma)

For your information, any combination of qualifications with an equivalent grade will be acceptable.

Who can apply?

To be eligible to apply you:

  • will be at least 16 years of age at the time of making your application
  • will not be in full-time education (you can apply while still attending school/college/university but will have finished or intend to finish your studies by the time your apprenticeship starts)
  • will need to meet the Civil Service Nationality requirements to apply.

ALS eligibility

Please note that ALS our training providers have their own eligibility in order to provide the funding required to undertake an apprenticeship. You may not be eligible to apply if:

  • you already hold a qualification at Level 3 or above in ICT, Software, Web and Telecoms or a similar subject
  • you already hold a qualification at Level 3 or above in Business Administration, Customer Service or a similar subject

What are the benefits?  

How much will I be paid?

You will earn £19,240 a year while training. When you pass your apprenticeship you can apply for a permanent job at the Welsh Government. Within 2 years of starting your apprenticeship you could be earning £22,500. 

You will get 31 days holidays as well as 10 public and privilege days. We offer flexible working arrangements to help you get the right work/life balance. You will also be eligible for membership of the Civil Service Pension Scheme
