About the apprenticeship

Duties

• To carry out maintenance work with due diligence and in compliance with Health & Safety and legal and quality systems.
• Observing, learning and understanding a wide range of engineering skills and processes while under the instruction of skilled technical staff.
• To learn how to maintain workshop equipment and to keep it in good repair.
• To maintain and to ensure general good housekeeping of the workplace.
• To deal with any unscheduled and emergency maintenance work, including all fault finding and necessary repair and striving to identify the root cause in each occasion.
• Identification of improvements that can be made to production lines or individual pieces of equipment in order to improve efficiencies and throughputs, and look to engineer out unnecessary costs from the business.
• Attend appointed training agency and any additional training courses deemed necessary by the company.
• Successful completion of academic studies and vocational training highlighting any issues early on.

Turner Precision Ltd are seeking an individual with good engineering intuition and understanding to join our fully funded Apprenticeship Programme.
Based in capital business Park Cardiff, Turner Precision is a specialist machining company with extensive expertise in the manufacture of components for the Electronics and Aerospace industries and have extensive workshop facilities covering Manual and CNC Turning and Milling operations. Recently Turner Precision has become an Employee Ownership Trust where all members of staff share in the responsibilities and benefits of the business and where a true sense of team exists.
The successful candidate will undertake their formal training with our specialist training partner the Newport & District Training Association where they will spend 8-week blocks undertaking a structured course leading to a BTEC qualification after two years. Alternating with this training environment the individual will be employed at our facility in Capital Business Park Cardiff working with an experienced Apprentice Master to develop their skills in a working environment.
The successful Candidate will be offered a salary of £16,500 for the first year with staged increases throughout their apprenticeship and after a 6-month qualifying period join the company's profit related bonus scheme.
On successful completion of the apprenticeship a permanent position will be offered together with an improved pay and benefits package.

Skills & Knowledge:
• Educated to GCSE standard (to include Mathematics and English) Minimum 5 GCSEs required.
• Basic engineering practical ability and interest.
• Good general process and product knowledge and mechanical awareness.
• Understanding of the engineering team goals.
• Awareness of all relevant aspects of Health & Safety and environmental issues.
• Strong communication skills and good social skills, gets on well with people.
• Good work ethic is essential as is reliability and commitment to the company.

Who can apply?

To be eligible to apply you:

  • will not be in full-time education (you can apply while still attending school/college/university but will have finished or intend to finish your studies by the time your apprenticeship starts)
  • will need to meet the Civil Service Nationality requirements to apply.

ALS eligibility

Please note that ALS our training providers have their own eligibility in order to provide the funding required to undertake an apprenticeship. You may not be eligible to apply if:

  • you already hold a qualification at Level 3 or above in ICT, Software, Web and Telecoms or a similar subject
  • you already hold a qualification at Level 3 or above in Business Administration, Customer Service or a similar subject

What are the benefits?  

How much will I be paid?

You will earn £19,240 a year while training. When you pass your apprenticeship you can apply for a permanent job at the Welsh Government. Within 2 years of starting your apprenticeship you could be earning £22,500. 

You will get 31 days holidays as well as 10 public and privilege days. We offer flexible working arrangements to help you get the right work/life balance. You will also be eligible for membership of the Civil Service Pension Scheme
