Kent Fire and Rescue Service is responsible for delivering fire and rescue services to more than 1.7 million people in Kent.

With 55 fire stations and 1,200 operational members of staff, Kent Fire and Rescue Service has a fleet of more than 75 fire engines and other operational vehicles.

Every year firefighters deal with around 16,500 incidents. These include nearly 1,000 road crashes, around 750 house fires, over 2,400 non-fire rescues, including flooding incidents.

There are approximately 250 non-operational staff from various departments, mainly based at Headquarters who support the day to day running of the Service.

Description of Vacancy

To provide day to day administrative support as part of the Business Support Team.

The core focus of this post is to work to defined business standards and processes in order to provide a wide range of administrative duties and financial management support to staff within Kent Fire & Rescue Service.

This is a higher level apprenticeship and is suited to an individual who already has previously completed a Level 2 and 3 business administration apprenticeship; or its equivalent.


37 hours per week

The Business Support Team in the Training Centre at Maidstone is open and cover the hours of 08:00 – 17:00 hours

Team members work on a rota which changes daily to suit the team’s requirement

Rota hours are option 1 : 08:00 – 16:00 or

Option 2 : 09:00 – 17:00

Skills Required

Ability to follow set procedures and instructions in order to efficiently follow agreed processes

Ability to organise and prioritise tasks to meet specific timetables and deadlines

Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, this will include dealing sensitively with customer’s enquiries

Good Microsoft IT skills

Create and edit documentation using data from a variety of sources

Ability to research specific information via the internet

Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times

Ability to carrying out reception and switchboard tasks

Ability to operate office equipment such as a photocopier and scanning of documents

Ability to follow finance procedures and enter information into a finance system to process purchase orders and invoices

Make travel and accommodation arrangements

Qualifications Required

Literacy and numeracy to a good GCSE grade A-C (4-9) or equivalent standard in order to fulfil the role.

We are interested in candidates who not only have GCSE’s but qualifications or their equivalents at level 3 – A levels grades A-C, or completed a level 2 and 3 business administration apprenticeship previously.

Minimum of 12-18 months working in a business administration role and ability to provide examples.

Training Provided

On the job training with the employer whilst working towards the latest government approved Apprenticeship Standard – and Functional Skills if appropriate.

Regular work based assessments/observations carried out by Kent Training & Apprenticeships Tutor Assessor, to determine competency and meet with Awarding Body standards.

Important Information
