What will the apprentice be doing?

As a Software Engineer Apprentice, you will develop key skills and experience in the following:
  • Programming skills in C or C++
  • Knowledge of OpenGL, graphics programming and mathematical systems modelling
  • Experience of working in multi-disciplined agile environment Familiarity with requirements management tools, aircraft and sensor systems and training simulator systems
  • New tools and infrastructure used for the development engineering environment
  • Development of quality software solutions that adhere to timescale and budget
  • Domain specific knowledge and application of mathematics skills to model aircraft and simulation systems
  • Opportunity to develop creative software solutions
  • Organisational skills with well-rounded communication and relationship building abilities
  • Digital Technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

Through our degree apprenticeship you'll be making the most of your talents, getting to understand engineering from the ground up; and doing so with the help of one of the biggest and best names in the industry.

As a Software Engineering Apprentice you will be studying towards a BSc in Digital and Technology Solutions with Warwick University following the Software Engineering pathway. For the duration of this four year programme you will combine university studies with practical application, working within our software function in Crawley.

This programme is delivered via a block-release model whereby you will attend an average of six weeks at university per year - remote support will be provided online, as well as workplace support with both your technical and practical development.

You will be given one day per week in which to focus on your studies. For the other four days you will be working in the business, applying your university learning in a real-life software environment.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

At the end of the apprenticeship you be working as a software engineer within one of the Thales UK businesses.
