What will the apprentice be doing?

Our Aerospace Engineering Degree Apprenticeship programme caters for those who are interested in the practical and theoretical aspects of supporting a fleet of helicopters, helping to maintain airworthy and available aircraft, along with performance analysis of our products.

Over the five-and-a-half-year programme you will be trained to become a Product Support Engineer and become an integral part of the Customer Support organisation, with the ultimate aim of moving you into a final placement area based on business requirements and the skills displayed during the apprenticeship.

The apprenticeship will start with an Induction into Leonardo, followed by a team building week (including overnight accommodation) at an offsite location incorporating all Early Careers new starts. There will also be a Yeovil College Induction to ensure that apprenticeship requirements and expectations are fully established.

The structure of the Apprenticeship programme will be as follows:

Year 1:

Full time at Yeovil College to complete a Level 2 competence qualification in Aerospace and Aviation Engineering (practical/workshop based) and start a Level 4 Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Aeronautical Engineering (knowledge/classroom based). There will also be some Enrichment activity. Post-Christmas, there is a possibility of working on-site in your placement at Leonardo Helicopters for 1 day a week

Year 2:

Work placements at Leonardo Helicopters (4 days per week) and starting the Level 4 competence (work related) qualification in Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing. Attend Yeovil College (1 day per week) to complete the Level 4 HNC in Aeronautical Engineering, and start the Level 5 Higher National Diploma (HND) in Aeronautical Engineering

Year 3:

Work placements at Leonardo Helicopters (4 days per week) and continuing the Level 4 competence (work related) qualification in Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing. Attend Yeovil College (1 day per week) to complete the Level 5 HND in Aeronautical Engineering

Year 4:

Work placements at Leonardo Helicopters (4 days per week) and completing the Level 4 competence (work related) qualification in Engineering Technical Support (or equivalent qualification). Attend Yeovil College and Plymouth University (minimum of 1 day per week) to start level 6 top up Degree (BEng) in Aeronautical Engineering

Year 5:

Work placements at Leonardo Helicopters (4 days per week) and completing the Level 4 competence (work related) qualification in Engineering Technical Support (or equivalent qualification). Attend Yeovil College and Plymouth University (minimum of 1 day per week) to complete the (BEng) in Aeronautical Engineering.

Whilst on your journey through Customer Support you will experience first hand what it entails to support aircraft for our large customer base. Activities will include offering technical advice, maintenance solutions and working on product improvements. The disciplines vary from Repair Design, Tooling Design, Fault Investigation and Project Managing solutions. There will be opportunities to work at Customer facilities and potentially to travel further afield.

Your placements will consist of 3-6-month rotations across the Customer Support directorate, mostly within Product Support Engineering. This includes the opportunity to do a 6-month external placement elsewhere in the business.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

You will complete the Level 6 Aerospace Engineer (ST0010) apprenticeship standard.
