Main duties of the job

This post is a fixed term apprentice contract

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is passionate about improving the lives and health of people in Sandwell to start a career in Public Health.

The post holder will join our Research and Intelligence function, working with colleagues across the Public Health team to develop specialist skills in population health intelligence alongside broader skills and knowledge in all areas of Public Health. At least 20% of time will be spent on off-the-job training, which will consist of completing the BSc Public Health programme.

The BSc Public Health curriculum aims to equip Apprentices with the knowledge and skills across the 3 pillars of public health (prevention, protection and promotion) and in healthcare public health, which cuts across all pillars. The concepts, theories and methods applied to real life situations are designed to prepare Apprentices for a range of varied roles within the field of public health.

Candidates should have:
  • Level 2 or equivalent English and maths qualifications, grade C or above
  • Demonstration of successful study at Level 3 (A levels, Access, BTEC) in a relevant field, or equivalent experience
  • Good communications skills, both written and verbal
  • Skills and experience in the analysis and interpretation of data

Job responsibilities

This will be a three-year degree apprenticeship post based in the Councils Public Health team.

The post holder will be based primarily within the Research & Intelligence function; however, during their apprenticeship they will rotate around teams within Public Health to ensure that they experience the full scope of Public Health practice.

The apprenticeship will consist of 20% off-the-job training and 80% on-the-job training.

They will be supported in the workplace by their Line Manager, who will be based within the Research & Intelligence Team, and their Workplace Mentor, who will be another member of staff within the Public Health team.

Off-the job training (20% WTE) will consist of completing the BSc Public Health programme, including:

attending university

preparing assignments

learning support from both the University and Line Manager/Workplace Mentor

research

shadowing

visits to other departments and industry visits

external training activities and events The BSc Public Health curriculum aims to equip Apprentices with the knowledge and skills across the 3 pillars of public health (prevention, protection and promotion) and in healthcare public health, which cuts across all pillars. The concepts, theories and methods applied to real life situations are designed to prepare Apprentices for a range of varied roles within the field of public health.

On-the-job training (80% WTE) will be co-ordinated to the taught degree programme so that learning is supplemented and enhanced by practical application.

After an initial 6 months with the Research & Intelligence team the post holder will rotate around other teams including Health Protection & Sexual Health, Prevention & Behaviour Change, Healthy Urban Development & Pollution Control, Childrens Public Health, Communities & Partnerships and Addictive Behaviours.

While the aim will be to learn about different areas of Public Health, a key area of focus in working across all teams will be on supporting the information and intelligence elements.

This will enable them to develop a broad understanding of public health issues and approaches, while also developing analytic expertise that would enable them to apply for more specialist research and intelligence roles as well as generic public health roles.

Further details of the course are available. In addition to the BSc Public Health, the course will map onto Public Health Knowledge and Skills Framework (PHKSF) and Public Health Practitioner Apprenticeship standard.

At the end of the three years Apprentices will be registration ready for the UK Public Health Register.

Applicants should be aware that if at any time during the course they change jobs/are made redundant and are no longer in relevant employment as determined by the employer and the University, they will be withdrawn from the course. However, the apprentice may be able to continue the course if employed and supported within a similar organisation.

Your current duties and responsibilities:-

1. Work with members of the Public Health team to develop and apply theoretical learning on a variety of public health topics across the 3 pillars of public health (prevention, protection and promotion) and in healthcare public health.

2. Within each team rotation, to participate fully as a member of that team, including attending team meetings and project-specific meetings as required.

3. Attend university teaching and complete related training and learning activities as required, including independent study, research, shadowing, visits to other departments and industry visits, and external training and events.

4. Engage proactively with University tutors/supervisors and with your Line Manager and Workplace Mentor to support your learning.

5. Develop knowledge and understanding of the wider health and care system and the role of local authority public health teams.

6. Develop understanding of the local authority context, structure and processes.

7. Develop the theoretical knowledge required for data analysis, including the use of appropriate statistical and numerical techniques, and how to manipulate the data, interpret and report on the results. 8. Develop knowledge and experience of using relevant software, and of analytical databases and their abilities.

9. Develop skills in providing advice and guidance on analyses to others from a non-statistical background.

10. Learn how to extract, analyse, interpret and present data from various sources in reports and presentations to a variety of audiences that will provide information on the health and health needs of the local population.

11. Learn how to collate, cleanse, quality assure and input data to determine progress towards local health targets, other strategic plans and performance dashboards.

12. Develop skills and knowledge to provide advice and data input and analysis support to others to support contract management and the production of performance dashboards.

13. Be responsible for the collection and operation of statistical epidemiological information in specific areas, with appropriate support.

14. Actively support the development of data sets and information systems, and where appropriate communicate with stakeholders and senior team members to ensure data collected reflects their information.

15. Keep abreast of related national information developments as part of continuous professional development.

16. Manage their own detailed priorities in consultation with their line manager to meet the demands for timely reporting.

17. Support the dissemination of statistics and information to all stakeholders via a number of different media, electronically or written reports.

18. Work, store and transmit data in accordance with data protection, Caldicott Guardian, freedom of information systems and confidentiality principles.

19. Participate in organisational development activities and departmental training events.

20. Work within organisational and professional policies and procedures seeking advice where necessary.

21. Operate on own initiative within boundaries identified by the team, taking advice from manager if required.

22. To participate in the operation of the Councils Appraisal Scheme.

23.
