Job summary

The National Health Service Blood and Transplant Tissue Services are an integral part of the NHS. Our Tissue Donation Programme saves and radically improves hundreds of lives every year. You will be willing to work towards the Level 4 Healthcare Science Associate apprenticeship with Healthcare Science Diploma. If you do not hold GCSEs at C and above for maths and English, you must be willing to work towards the Functional Skills qualifications. Please be aware this role will involve retrieval of multiple tissues from newly deceased donors to help save the lives of others. You will start work with NHSBT as a Tissue Retrieval Apprentice (Annex 21 - 70% of Band 4 and will then progress to Senior Tissue Retrieval Apprentice (Annex 21 75% Band 4)) after one year in post. Your Initial Salary will therefore be £18,397 + 15% Higher Cost Area Supplement.

Main duties of the job

In this role you will study towards the Level 4 Healthcare Science Associate apprenticeship whilst undertaking the role of Retrieval Assistant. Following successful training and assessment you will be promoted to the role of Senior Retrieval Assistant. You will support the work of the Retrieval team, performing a range of routine tasks which relate to the donation, transport and follow up of deceased donors. This will include performing deceased tissue retrieval (e.g. skin and bone) under direct supervision. You will be competent to facilitate the retrieval of eyes from deceased donors without supervision at non-NHSBT locations after training and assessment. You will work flexibly across the range of activities as rostered. You will be required to work weekends and evenings with notice. Any other opportunities that will enable you to successfully attain your apprenticeship.
