Goldwyn School is a KCC Foundation Special School for children and young people with an EHCP for SEMH needs from age 10 to 16 (provision for 16+ is delivered at Goldwyn Sixth Form College).  Students who are admitted to the school have complex and wide ranging difficulties; that come from a wide range of socio-economic backgrounds and also from a wide geographical area.

Description of Vacancy

Goldwyn School wish to appoint an ICT Support Apprentice.  The successful candidate will be based at Goldwyn Ashford School but will be required to work across all of our sites alongside the Senior ICT Technician.

The successful candidate must display some technical capability as well as an ability and desire to develop the skills needed to work effectively to support the ICT needs of staff and students.

Under the instructions and guidance of the Senior IT Technician at all times:

  1. Provide general ICT technical and administrative support within the school
  2. Support the school’s ICT provision with general maintenance of the ICT network
  3. Assist with and carry out backup procedures when needed and support with general system administration
  4. Maintain an up to date inventory of ICT equipment, and ensure cleanliness of equipment
  5. Maintain stocks of spare parts and consumable items, including printer consumables
  6. Software installation, maintenance and upgrading in line with school procedures
  7. Administration and development of Internet, Intranet, Extranet and E-mail systems, including learning platforms and the school website
  8. Assist with printing problems – both hardware and software – determining and rectifying the cause of faults
  9. To keep abreast of technological developments and encourage the use of ICT at all levels
  10. Assist in the setup of presentation equipment for staff training and assemblies
  11. Ensure that requests for support are dealt with in a prompt manner, ensuring that staff are kept informed of progress
  12. Provide support for the management of regular updates on the network (anti-virus, virus definitions, windows and other software updates)
  13. Assist in other parts of the school business as directed by the Senior IT Technician or Principal.
  14. Comply with policies, procedures and undertake relevant training relating to child protection, health, safety & security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person.


34 hours per week term time only

8.30am – 4.00pm (Monday to Thursday) – 30 minute unpaid lunch break

8.30am – 3.00pm (Friday) – 30 minute unpaid lunch break


Skills Required

Strong IT skills, preferably in Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook

Ability to demonstrate a flexible, innovate and positive approach

Ability to approach change positively

Commitment to deliver quality ICT services that meet customer requirements

Ability to filter information and prioritise tasks

Sufficient drive to seek work on own initiative and ask for help where needed

Interest in the technical aspects of computers & networking

Qualifications Required

3 GCSE’s (or equivalent) grades A-C in any subject, plus GCSE English and Maths (or equivalents) at grade D or above

Willingness to work towards an NVQ Level 2 or 3 qualification

Familiarity with Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel and Outlook)


Training Provided

On the job training with the employer whilst working towards the Apprenticeship Framework – consisting of the Intermediate NVQ Level, Technical Certificate and Functional Skills if appropriate.

Regular work based assessments/observations carried out by Kent Training & Apprenticeships Tutor Assessor, to determine competency and meet with Awarding Body standards.
