What will the apprentice be doing?

Our Applied Professional Engineering Degree Apprenticeship programme is aimed at those with a passion for learning and innovation. Ambitious, innovative, and determined people, who respect our heritage and can think beyond the challenges of today to build the cars of tomorrow.

Internal combustion engines have dominated automotive propulsion since cars were introduced, but we are reimagining the future. While continuing to refine the quality of our combustion engines, we are expanding into electrification, catering to the demands of today and tomorrow. As an Applied Professional Engineering degree apprentice, you will become a multi-disciplinary engineer, developing digital technology solutions for modern luxury vehicles that are renowned for their desirability and performance.

Working efficiently, our goal is to create high-quality, desirable, and technologically advanced products that will shape the future of mobility. You will be working on features and products available to customers in the next 10 years right through to current vehicles.

As an apprentice in the Product Design & Development pathway, you could be based within any of the following Product Engineering functional areas: Engineering Body Chassis (EBC), Engineering Vehicle (EV), Engineering Powertrain (EP), Engineering Operations (EO). You could also be based within Product Integrity (PI), Engineering Quality (EQ),Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) or Stamping Group. You will be asked to indicate your preference during the application process. See website for more details.

Depending on the area tasks can include:
  • Work closely with the design studio to translate award-winning designs into engineering reality, taking into account performance, manufacturability, sustainability, cost and weight
  • You will learn the tools, engineering methodologies and techniques to create and optimise cutting-edge solutions
  • Comprehensive training to become a zone integration engineer and will work on live projects spanning elegant engineering, vehicle efficiency, driver and passenger safety, usability, software solutions, driving characteristics and sustainability
  • Gain expertise in competitor benchmarking, computer modelling and software whilst working on innovative technologies including electrified propulsion systems, thermal systems and future propulsion solutions
  • You could find yourself focusing on prototyping and tooling to expand our design capability, developing into a Test Engineer at our Engine Manufacturing Centre
  • You will rapidly develop in-demand skills whilst acting as the interface between core engineering teams and manufacturing
  • Alongside Senior Engineers, you will work on 'critical concern investigations' to resolve issues and create our world-class products

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

As part of your Apprenticeship, you will study for a BEng in Applied Professional Engineering with the University of Warwick (WMG).

Over the first three years of your Apprenticeship, you will study a range of modules designed to help you develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to thrive as an engineering professional. A network of apprentice tutors and line managers will regularly review your progress and offer advice to support you in performing at your best.

These modules are taught in blocks throughout the academic year by WMG, a key part of the University of Warwick. You will benefit from a mix of lectures, practical laboratory assignments, seminars and tutorials delivered in person and online, and you will also enjoy access to a virtual learning environment for further support.

In your final year, you will undertake a work-based project that also forms part of your End Point Assessment (EPA). On successful completion of your EPA, you will achieve your Level 6 Apprenticeship - and will be ready for an amazing career with Jaguar Land Rover.

You can find out more about your curriculum here (this will be slightly different for apprentices in Stamping Group - see Jaguar Land Rover website for details): https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/sci/wmg/education/undergraduatept/applied-professional-engineering/
