What will the apprentice be doing?

As an Apprentice Fire Safety Engineer, with Arup you will develop your knowledge,skills,and behaviours in the following areas:

Understanding the first principles of fire engineering including:
  • Fire dynamics, smoke dynamics, heat transfer, human behaviour, psychological impact of fire on humans, physiological impacts of fire (tenability), combustion process, products of combustion, structural response and how they are used
  • Understanding and application of the legal and regulatory frameworks, statutoryguidance,and British and European Standard guidance in the context of fire engineering
  • Understanding,assessing,and evaluating fire engineering solutions, systems, products and processes throughout the life the cycle of a project including design, construction and occupation
  • Programme and project management
  • Research, information management and report writing
  • Developing teamwork, communication skills and collaboration skills by working within other engineering professionals, regulatory professionals and with clients

These competencies will be developed through practical on-the-job training, working with experienced fire engineers and other professionals across the business, and classroom-based training with Arup and at university, following an apprenticeship pathway to an undergraduate degree in Fire Engineering.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

As part of your apprenticeship, you'll study towards the Level6 Fire Safety Engineer qualification.

The apprenticeship will typically run over a5-6-yearperiod,duringwhich time you will undertake a supervised programme of training and block release with aUniversity. You will also be assigned a mentor within the Fire team who you will work and liaise closely with and be there to guide and advise you throughout your time as an apprentice.

Throughout your apprenticeship, you'll have access to our online network. You'll also take internal courses. These cover technical aspects of the business, such as software, but also vital 'soft' skills such as report writing and working effectively.

Our apprentices are employed on a permanent basis, so you'll continue to progress with Arup once you've completed your course.
