What will the apprentice be doing?

Our apprenticeships allow you to study for industry-recognised qualifications whilst earning a competitive salary. As an apprentice, you will study with a training provider, such as a university, and combine this experience with real responsibilities in the workplace.

Railway engineering design technicians will:
  • Use and apply engineering principles and techniques, to make decisions, solve problems, often across a range of disciplines such as signalling, rolling stock, track, systems, civil engineering, communications, electrification or electrical plant
  • They will also support in the development and production, analysis and planning of railway engineering designs that inform others, either internally or externally, where designs are utilised to construct, maintain or improve rail systems
  • Some technicians will also support in the surveying and checking of progress and quality factors of the technical design works on site
  • You'll help us to deliver effective and professional services for a range of varied and high-profile clients such as Network Rail, HS2, and many others
  • For this apprenticeship opportunity we are recruiting into our Rail Track and Rail Electrical teams

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

As part of your apprenticeship, you'll study towards the Level 6 Rail and Rail Systems Senior Engineer qualification.

You will undertake a supervised programme of training and block release with aUniversity. You will also be assigned a mentor who you will work and liaise closely with and be there to guide and advise you throughout your time as an apprentice.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

When joining us as one of our apprentices, you'll enjoy the opportunity to study for a paid, professionally recognised qualification in a discipline that will help you further your career.

Throughout your apprenticeship, you'll have access to our online network. You'll also take internal courses. These cover technical aspects of the business, such as software, but also vital 'soft' skills such as report writing and working effectively.

Our apprentices are employed on a stable basis, so you'll continue to progress with Arup once you've completed your course.
