What will the apprentice be doing?

It is the intention that this role and similar roles in the future will be filled by candidates wanting to be future managers and leaders in the company.

Initially we'd want you to gain experience in fabrication, welding, and machining, after which you will be based in the drawing office/design department to continue your learning & development. The role is very important to the company and future growth plans, as an apprentice you will have exposure to all aspects of the business. As you get into the role of design you will start to visit our customers on site with your colleagues to look at solutions and start to work on live projects. This apprenticeship ultimately will allow you to get wide exposure to an engineering manufacturing business and ultimately career choices as you progress.

Reporting to the Drawing Office Manager, as an apprentice you will start your tenure at the company, working in the fabrication, welding and machining areas which will allow you to gain an understanding of how our products are manufactured. Once you have gained sufficient experience in the manufacturing process, for a minimum 12 months, you will then transition through to the Drawing & Design Office, which will complement your learning at the AMRC Training Centre.

You will be involved with all aspects of product design and development from initial concepts through to production, and over time will be able to demonstrate the ability to analyse problems from first principles and come up with innovative and cost-effective solutions, working effectively as part of a team. Eventually you will be capable of working on your own to a specification and producing the quality of work required to meet outlined objectives set by the company.

Principle role & responsibilities :
  • Initially in the factory you will work with skilled engineers and join other apprentices who are training to be fabricators, welders, and machinists
  • Attention to detail is also key and this role will suit someone who recognises detail and quality
  • Initially you work in the factory, possibly for a full year and hence being practical will help you in your first year
  • Transition to the design/drawing/technical office in year two will mean you start with a good grounding in steel - how we fabricate, how we weld and how we machine
  • As you develop having the ability to work as a team, communicate to your colleagues and customers will be important
  • Translating client requirements into practical terms that can be implemented by a team
  • Organising & prioritising project tasks into the required timeline
  • Ensuring the design process recognises current legislation, standards, and codes of practice, and where appropriate liaise with the SHEQ Manager to ensure full compliance of new and existing products
  • Testing product designs using models, prototypes, specialist computer software and computer-aided design (CAD) technology
  • Produce 2D/3D CAD design drawings for the manufacturing process
  • Identifying problems with the project, taking the future lead on developing solutions and ensuring solutions are implemented
  • Liaising with third parties such as external contractors around time scales and working practices
  • Strive to eliminate health and safety and financial risks in the design, manufacturing, and installation processes

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

Training - You will be required to complete level 2 foundation skills training in machining, CAD and fabrication and welding alongside University of Sheffield teaching classes that are focused on manufacturing engineering. Qualifications - The ideal candidate will achieve a BEng in Mechanical Manufacture and Level 6 Product Design & Development Apprenticeship Diploma.

You will study on a Degree Level 6 Product Design & Development Engineer standard on a Foundation Degree in Mechanical Engineering pathway. On completion of this, you will gain a qualification in Engineering at Degree Level 6 standard.

During the first year of the apprenticeship, your learning will take place at the University of Sheffield's AMRC Training Centre based at Catcliffe, Rotherham, for an initial block of study on a full-time basis. After this, you will attend the Training Centre for one day a week for knowledge study.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

Completion of the University of Sheffield's AMRC Training Centre apprenticeships are nationally recognised qualifications which are acknowledged and respected by employers across the world. These can open the door to many more opportunities, such as Engineering Management and Project Engineering positions across a range of sectors worldwide.
