RAL Space provides world-leading space research and technology development, space test facilities, instrument and mission design, and studies of science and technology requirements for new missions. The Department has established a long-standing heritage of excellence in space flight going back over 50 years, with significant involvement in over 200 space missions. It has a unique position at the heart of the interaction between the UK government, space industry and academia.

 

The Imaging Systems Division (ISD) is one of the key engineering Divisions in RAL Space and is looking to recruit a Level 4 Associate Project Manager Apprentice joining us in September 2023. The ISD specialisesing in providing bespoke optics, sensors and electronics instrumentation. We are involved in a variety of projects from R&D focussed activities to full flight programmes covering a wide range of applications in space-borne and ground-based astronomical instrumentation, earth observation and planetary exploration.

 

The Programme Management Group sits within ISD to manage and support the Division’s portfolio of projects. The Group is also responsible for financial and resource monitoring of the Division and the delivery of key information to the Division Head and Group Leaders to enable strategic decision making in terms of future work and technology development. The Group is active in identifying potential opportunities for funding, whilst leading and supporting bid preparation for new work, as well as being committed to establishing and maintaining a delivery plan for future research and development.

Through the training provider, Provek, you will undertake a Level 4 Associate Project Manager apprenticeship standard which will include:

 

Fully recognised apprenticeship qualification – Level 4 Associate Project Manager On-the-job competency training APM Project Management Qualification (PMQ) The opportunity to put your new skills into practice by managing a project within the department We are looking for individuals to assist our RAL Space Project Managers across a wide portfolio of projects and programmes whilst undergoing their own training as a project manager. The postholder would be expected to work across several projects at once, as part of a multi-disciplinary team, so excellent teamwork and a collaborative communication style is important for this role, as are excellent organisation skills and attention to detail. The postholder will be based within the Imaging Systems Division Programme Management Group, with much opportunity for involvement in different projects and scope for career progression.

Main duties/responsibilities will include:

 

Assist with, and maintain, appropriate systems to enable effective planning and scheduling of projects e.g. Microsoft Excel, Microsoft SharePoint and Microsoft Project Assist in maintaining project controls and producing project reports Take responsibility for project file management using robust version control Organise key project meetings and provide secretariat support Act as the focal point to external requests for project information Assist with, and maintain, risk and issue logs, escalating as appropriate Monitor, and proactively progress, bid/proposals through our bid management process Download and present financial summaries to the senior project managers Complete financial summaries for senior management reviews Input data into earned value analyses of projects Update resource needs in our resource planning system Raise requisitions and monitor status of those orders Person specification (Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and any special requirements)

Essential:

 

Achieved or predicted to achieve 5 GCSE passes at Grade C/4 or above including Maths, English and a STEM subject by September 2023 (or equivalent qualifications)  A minimum of 2 A Levels, or a BTEC, or previous Level 3 Apprenticeship  Strong communication skills  Experience of working well in a team environment  Excellent organisation skills  Excellent attention to detail  Ability to work on several projects at once  Desirable:
