What will the apprentice be doing?

The role is part of the R&D department at Luxfer MEL Technologies' (LMT) Manchester site. The magnesium business within LMT design, develop and manufacture novel magnesium alloys used in a range of applications from aerospace. The zirconium chemicals business at LMT develop materials that go into catalyst and healthcare applications.

Your duties will include but not limited to:
  • Sectioning of castings, extrusion and forgings, followed by preparation of specimens for analysis
  • Mechanical testing of materials
  • Assisting in the developmental foundry to prepare small castings
  • Collating results and report writing
  • Working with the wider business to improve all company products and processes

Note :

In a rapidly developing business environment, flexible team working is the way forward to meet the Company's goals as set in the overall strategic plan. Therefore, you will, from time to time, be required to undertake other activities of a similar nature that fall within your capabilities. It is necessary for each employee to assist, or cover all aspects of their departmental responsibilities when the need arises.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?
  • The degree award is BEng (Hons) Materials Technology
  • Functional Skills if required
  • You will attend Sheffield Hallam University on a series of short study blocks

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

Permanent roles are offered at the end of successful apprenticeship for a long term career with Luxfer MEL Technologies.

On-going training will be given to support the individual's learning and development.
