What will the apprentice be doing?

Role & responsibilities:
  • Develop knowledge in the technology by interfacing with other departments and participating in the learning program to become an active member of the organisation
  • Broaden your knowledge of the business - a period of time is spent in different departments so this helps you to gain experience and understanding of technologies and working practices. This allows you to determine a career path and development opportunity
  • Develop Engineering calculations, drawings, specifications and reports while communicating. This effectively and competently develops your ability to work with more senior staff, so that decisions and design considerations can be made by internal and external customers from the output of the findings
  • Broaden core key skills and drive towards completing the apprenticeship

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

Individual employers will set the selection criteria for their Apprenticeships. In order to optimise success candidates will typically have 5 GCSE's at Grade C/4 or above or equivalent, including Mathematics, English and a Science, Technology or Engineering related subject, as well as A Levels at grade C or above in both a Mathematical based subject and a Science, Technology, Engineering or additional Mathematics related subject, or 90+ credits in an Engineering BTEC.

The Apprenticeship as a Product Design and Development Technician provides a potential preparation route for this Apprenticeship.

You will study on a Product Design and Development Engineer (Degree) Level 6 standard on a Foundation Degree in Manufacturing Technology pathway. On completion of this, you will gain a qualification in Engineering at Degree Level 6 standard.

During the first year of the apprenticeship, your learning will take place at the University of Sheffield's AMRC Training Centre based at Catcliffe, Rotherham, for an initial block of study on a full-time basis. After this, you will attend the Training Centre for one day a week for knowledge study.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

Completion of the University of Sheffield's AMRC Training Centre apprenticeships are nationally recognised qualifications which are acknowledged and respected by employers across the world. These can open the door to many more opportunities, such as Engineering Management and Project Engineering positions across a range of sectors worldwide.
