What will the apprentice be doing?

Day to day duties include:

Pre-contract:
  • Site visits - Walking around and surveying sites, understand the client's direct needs and wants and producing cost plans based on knowledge of that site

Cost Planning:
  • Assisting senior surveyors in measuring tender documentation using RLB's in-house measuring software ROSS5D, Assisting senior surveyors in pricing cost plans based on RLB in-house benchmark data

Procurement and Tender
  • Helping senior surveyors create and planning procurement and tender route which are bespoke to the projects. Receiving and managing tender information; including drawings and specifications
  • Assisting senior surveyors in analysing tender returns (initial contractor submissions) including preparing recommendations for clients
  • Appointing contractors

Contract Practice:
  • Helping create and draw up contract documents for projects

Post-Contract:

Valuations:
  • Assisting a senior surveyor in assessing works undertaken in month, this will include visiting site and meeting contractors
  • Assisting in preparing recommendation for payments based upon the valuation

Variations:
  • Assisting a senior surveyor when reviewing changes to the contract scope, this will involve liaising with design team, contractors and project management team

Cost reporting:
  • Helping senior members of staff create and maintain cost reports throughout the life cycle of a project

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

Each candidate will be offered on the job Apprentice Training with monthly seminars topping up the training offered by the University. Additionally, to this the candidates, in the third year, begin structured chartership training which includes seminars, mock exams and one to one tutoring.

Off-the-job training will be provided by the University College of Estate Management (UCEM). You will achieve a Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) accredited BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying. Rather than attending formal lectures or classes, you'll study using UCEM's state-of-the-art online learning environment and digital library, supported with guidance from highly experienced tutors.

Upon completion of the BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying and the structured workplace learning you will undertake the RICS Assessment of Professional Competence leading to registration with the RICS as a Chartered Surveyor.

Typically, 4 days "on the job" training and 1 day "off the job training".

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

Following the completion of the candidate's apprenticeship they will be put through their chartership and enrolled on the business's future professionals' programme. This programme looks to help guide and progress all candidates through the business.

Things to consider

Strong focus on excel and in-house measuring software. Requirement to travel to site. Ability to balance workload and university study.
