What will the apprentice be doing?

You will have the opportunity to spend up to 24 months working within the Programmes Directorate alongside project and programme management professions, allowing you to develop your knowledge, skills and understanding whilst contributing to the Met Office aims.

You will also gain a nationally recognised IPMA Level D or APM Project Management qualification and eligibility for equivalent membership with APM on successful completion of the programme.

This apprenticeship is an exciting chance to see first-hand how Project Management supports the Met Office, as well as make a real impact in something the Met Office truly values.

As our Level 4 Project Management apprentice, the key duties are:
  • Undertake and successfully complete the training course throughout the duration of the apprenticeship ensuring requirements are met
  • Be able to demonstrate the skills learnt as the training period progresses by working independently or with a team, undertaking tasks as instructed and undertake more complex project work
  • Maintain a logbook and portfolio over the duration of the apprenticeship recording projects that have been undertaken to demonstrate the learning completed
  • Support project delivery at the Met Office from day 1 with responsibility increasing gradually over the 2 year period

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

Associate Project Manager Level 4 Apprenticeship Standard:
  • We would look for you to join us in September 2023 with your formal 2 year apprenticeship training with Exeter College beginning in October 2023
  • This post is for a fixed term period of up to 27 months and is part of a formal apprenticeship programme, lasting 2 years. Individuals will be expected to build their project management experience by working in a variety of Project and Programme settings, supported by local mentors and a defined work plan. As skills develop, individuals will start to manage small projects in their own right
  • No day is the same in project management and you could be updating a project plan, helping a Project Manager to prepare for a Project Board meeting and checking in with individuals to see how activities on the project are progressing
  • Our Project Manager Apprentices will work a hybrid pattern of homeworking and1 - 2 days a week in Exeter HQ and Exeter College

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?
  • Whilst this temporary apprentice post is for 27 months, there is the potential for it to develop into a permanent Project Manager Level 1 position on successful completion of your apprenticeship, currently paying a salary of £30,932 at the Met Office
