What will the apprentice be doing?

The Service Sector team supports a wide range of courses which cross a number of academic disciplines. The main activities are to provide high quality technical support for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, research and commercial clients in the specialist kitchen facilities and also to support a diverse range of other activities for the University.

Working within the Service Sector team you will be supporting food processing, nutrition and hospitality subject areas. Main duties will include the preparation of equipment and food, providing technical assistance during food preparation, production and product development practical kitchen sessions.
  • To provide technical advice, guidance and support, adhering to service standards, within a discipline area and team remit, i.e:
  • Laboratory and Analytical Operations
  • Sport Health Hospitality Nutrition
  • Arts and Creative Media
  • Engineering Electronics and Computing
  • Technical Resources and Services
  • To assist with the co-ordination and operational management of specialist spaces and equipment, working within a range of systems and processes, taking into account appropriate
    ethical and quality frameworks
  • To provide training for specialist space users, write guidance materials and promote awareness of the service e.g. advise staff of their responsibilities, relevant frameworks and agreed service standards
  • To motivate, lead and mentor staff where required, provide general guidance, coaching and support, developing their skills and knowledge. e.g. new starters and placement students, as
    required
  • To assist with communications and the promotion of activities / services following an established set of protocols and principles, in collaboration with other areas as required
  • To act as an initial point of escalation, providing guidance and support for a diverse range of queries, to maintain confidentiality and treat sensitive issues with appropriate tact and
    diplomacy
  • To contribute to the ongoing development of processes and procedures for the team, including guidelines and standards of good practice in the provision and maintenance of information
  • To support the development and operation of administrative systems, record keeping within an agreed framework (e.g. inventories, maintenance schedules, equipment loans):
    - retrieve data, collate and produce reports and statistical information
  • Administer systems of operation, e.g. stock control, expenditure tracking
  • Maintain and create data management systems and records, ensuring the consistency and integrity of information
  • Assist with the testing of software/system enhancements / developments as appropriate
  • To support TORS compliance with Health and Safety procedures, e.g. risk assessments and Fire Marshal duties
  • To support the development of online resources, proactively ensuring currency and accuracy of information, e.g. social media channels, designated websites, inductions and tutorials
  • To support or lead, where appropriate, specific projects / schemes / areas of work and evaluate the impact and effectiveness e.g. adapting the organisational layout of a specialist space in
    light of workflow and user interactions

The above list is not exhaustive and, as such, it is expected that you will be responsible for related issues commensurate to the level of the role.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?
  • You will be required to attend Sheffield Hallam University on a series of 4-day study blocks.
  • The degree award is BSc (Hons) Professional Practice in Food Technology.
