What will the apprentice be doing?

VPI Blackburn are looking for anapprentice to train alongside our existing, experienced team. As an apprentice you continue your studies to complete an HNC, covering a variety of skills & qualifications while earning a wage & completing invaluable practical skills in industry.

You will be working alongside a mentor and assisting the experienced shift maintenance team with the following duties:
  • Define & implement safety control measures appropriate to each maintenance activity informing the relevant people
  • Ensure the safe & efficient performance of every maintenance task in compliance with these measures
  • Plan maintenance activities to guide the maintenance team
  • Ensure that work instructions, permits, & safety briefings are available in advance of maintenance activities
  • Lead or undertake maintenance, modifications, repairs, upgrades, alterations & additions to systems, plant & equipment. Provide technical & team leadership, where appropriate, to complete maintenance activities
  • Carry out inspection activities on equipment
  • Inform teams of any significant maintenance & engineering technical issues as they occur. Provide technical & team leadership, advice & guidance as needed
  • Liaise with internal & external stakeholders ensuring that engineering & maintenance operations meet agreed timescales
  • Deal with problems that occur within the activity using a structured & controlled approach. For example, unexpected technical or process issues, team related issues, escalating as required
  • Generate documentation on completion of maintenance work to provide a complete record of the activity. Forward information required to support future asset maintenance planning. For example, test forms, defect reports, service records & handover reports
  • Review engineering & maintenance procedures identifying potential improvements to processes, materials, resources or planning

The role will occasionally involve some working at height, work within in confined spaces, and work with PPE required when working with chemicals. Specific training will be provided for these aspects of the role.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

Level 4 Lead Engineering Maintenance Technician:
  • BTEC Higher National Certificate in Engineering (General Engineering) or BTEC Higher National Certificate in Engineering (Operations Engineering)

Learning methods will vary but will include lectures and tutorials. In addition, seminars, field trips, scenario activities, laboratory and workshop practical demonstrations, guest lectures, discussions and debates all contribute to the learning experience to support the acquisition of subject specific skills and knowledge and the development of transferable and employment related skills.

You should typically expect to have around 15 contact hours per week if you are studying full time. In addition, you will have timetabled meetings with your pastoral tutor to discuss issues on a one-to-one basis.

You will be taught by an experienced teaching team whose expertise and knowledge are closely matched to the content of the modules on the course.

You will be required to apply your knowledge to a variety of assignments and activities which focus on the development of practical, interpersonal and higher-level thinking skills. The assessment reflects not only what you know but also what you can do to succeed in employment and higher education.

A variety of forms of assessment evidence are used. For many units, the practical demonstration of skills is necessary, and, for others, you will need to carry out your own research and analysis, working independently or as part of a team.
