Job Details

We're looking for a fearless apprentice to work with one of our ambitious employer - The Fire Protection Association (FPA).

This is an truly unique opportunity for you to join us and complete a Level 3 Laboratory Technician Apprenticeship and continue your career with the FPA.

The Fire Protection Association (FPA) is the UK's national fire safety organisation. They have an unrivalled reputation for quality and expertise in all aspects of fire protection. They work to identify the dangers of fire and help their clients reduce fire-related risks.

The FPA have one of the most versatile and comprehensive fire testing and research facilities in the UK.

Being an apprentice is hands-on, so you’ll get the chance to learn things you might otherwise not have experienced in a university or college environment.

The best part? You’ll be earning a salary while you gain your qualifications, meaning no huge student loans to pay back at the end of the programme!

The Package

At Tiro, we make great things happen for people. And that starts with you. In this role you’ll receive:

  • Starting salary of £19,000 per annum
  • 24 days annual leave plus bank holidays
  • Workings hours are 9am – 5pm, Monday to Friday
  • Company pension scheme
  • Optional private medical insurance
  • Access to mental health champions
  • Regular training and CPD opportunities

What will I be doing as a Laboratory Technician Apprentice?

As a Laboratory Technician Apprentice with the FPA, you will have an utterly unique opportunity to work in a non-traditional scientific environment. This isn’t a standard ‘white coat laboratory’ or sterile environment and it will require someone who’s not afraid to get stuck in.

You’ll be working as part of a close-knit team, supported, and guided by a team of professionals, each with diverse backgrounds and experiences you can learn from. It’s an amazing opportunity to get stuck in and no day will be the same!

Being an apprentice is hands-on, so you’ll get the chance to learn things you might otherwise not have experienced in a university or college environment. This is a very practical role within a ‘high visibility jacket’ laboratory and will involve working outdoors and occasionally at height or in a confined space.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Working with customer specifications to build test samples.
  • Verifying and checking samples prior to testing, measuring, and documenting.
  • Documenting tests, taking photographs, notes, and observations of samples.
  • Working to set procedures in line with specific standards.
  • Working with clients to supply accurate reporting of results & receiving technical enquiries.
  • Helping with operation of safety systems for the execution of fire testing and research.
  • Promptly identifying problems and reporting these immediately to the Line manager.

Each day is varied and will include recording of detailed test results, data and video processing and practical tasks like bricklaying, pipe fitting and monitoring test fires, equipment maintenance and fire test clear up.

What could the future look like?

There’s no limit to what you can achieve while working with the FPA. Their team is at the heart of what they do, and they are looking for someone who wants to play a key part in that long term.

There are opportunities to further develop and progress within the business after completion of the apprenticeship and you could build your career from Laboratory Technician to Lead Technician, Senior Technician and then into management.

Through ‘on-the-job’ training you’ll have the opportunity to learn new skills to provide competency and responsibility in carrying out testing and to help develop your career.

Hard work and determination will be recognised!

Are you ready to be our next fearless apprentice? Make sure you make the most of this opportunity before it's gone!
