What will the apprentice be doing?

This role is to fulfil the duties required to be undertaken as a Degree Level Civil Engineering Apprentice and support the work of a wider Civil Engineering team. The post holder will demonstrate the drive and initiative to work in an independent and flexible manner. Good skills and knowledge to deal with more complex and demanding situations will be necessary, as will the ability to work with minimal supervision.

The main purpose of the job will be to assist in the design, preparation, supervision and management of highways and structures improvement and maintenance schemes and other engineering projects and related duties in accordance with the County Councils policies and programmes.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

• To assist with the design, implementation and maintenance of highway and bridge related schemes and other engineering projects including the preparation of contract drawings, bills of quantities under the overall supervision of the more experienced staff within the team.
• To assist with the preparation of reports, studies and estimates.
• To assist with surveys, inspections and investigations for highway improvement and or maintenance schemes and other engineering projects as directed.
• To undertake the monitoring of contractor's site activities as directed by more experienced staff within the team.
• To undertake duties in accordance with Service Health and Safety policies and standards as directed by more experienced staff within the team. Also, to take personal responsibility for
their own safety.
• To assist with the varied day to day activities and general administrative duties of the Highways, Infrastructure Development & Waste (HIDW) and Planning, Transportation & Environment Services.
• Deliver first class, customer-focused support as set out in the County Councils Customer Service standards.
• To attend all necessary training events and courses and complete all related assignments, reports or other work required by the due date in order to successfully complete the training to
the required standard.

Throughout the programme, you'll attend Exeter University to learn the skills you need to excel in your career, while working alongside and being supported by our experienced Engineers and Technicians. Plus, you'll have access to a personal mentor to help guide your progression. In addition to earning a B.Eng Civil Engineering degree, you'll also have the opportunity to apply to become an Incorporated Engineer (I.Eng) with the Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE).

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?
