What will the apprentice be doing?

Responsibilities will be expected to be developed and finalised over time and will include but will not be restricted to:

The Legal Apprentice will be responsible for providing legal support and assistance as directed by the Group General Counsel or Senior Legal Advisers or Legal Associate and generally as a member of the Legal team including:

·Reviewing and negotiating legal documents including supplier terms & conditions and providing advice to colleagues across Jisc on potential legal implications arising to ensure the business can perform effectively.

·Working with the team to assist and give input on current matters and negotiations during busy periods and co-ordinating electronic execution of agreements and concluding matters where necessary.

·Carrying out legal research in respect of ongoing work for other legal team members and identifying relevant legal updates to add to maintained internal teamsite resource.

·Drafting contracts from templates, including specialised bespoke agreements (NDA's, sponsorship agreements, framework agreements and call-off contracts) and a variety of other legal documentation as required.

·Ensuring that Jisc templates conform with legislation and changes to Jisc process in collaboration with the rest of the team. This includes ensuring own legal knowledge and understanding is also up to date and relevant.

·Assisting and supporting other team members in the progression of contracts by engaging with internal clients, sector institutions, and suppliers.

·Involvement in reporting and strategic planning for the Legal team and working with Jisc teams to help streamline existing legal and contractual processes. Facilitating weekly legal team reporting to the Group General Counsel for wider Jisc group reporting processes including ELT.

·Developing and implementing risk mitigation and recording solutions in collaboration with corporate services cross functional teams including Data Protection, Information Security, Quality and GI in collaboration with procurement and finance areas.

·Working with Jisc Data Protection team to develop and maintain appropriate internal processes and provide data protection guidance to the business to ensure continued data protection compliance.

·Preparing and delivering tailored tcompany and corporate structure information including information required for compliance and the completion of supplier and customer questionnaires.

·Engaging with the business by scheduling regular legal requirements meetings to identify possible legal issues and offer proactive advice to the business to mitigate and manage any potential legal risks, ensuring minutes are recorded and circulated from these meetings.

·Supporting the legal advisers, the wider team and the Group General Counsel to identify, launch, update and maintain new legal technology systems and resources to benefit and improve the operational efficiency of the team and raise visibility of the strategic role of the legal team.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

Achievement of the Solicitor level 7 standard and the associated apprenticeship assessment plan will satisfy the SRA's regulatory framework for qualification as a solicitor, subject to the SRA's usual tests of character and suitability.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

Qualification as a solicitor.

The core work of the legal team is drafting and negotiation of robust and fair contractual terms to underpin Jisc's relationships with its customers and suppliers in order to mitigate and manage any potential legal risks.
The legal team currently consists of the following members: the Group General Counsel, two Senior Legal Advisers, two Legal Associates, two Legal Advisers and the Legal Apprentice.
