What will the apprentice be doing?

Crop (Rice Biotechnology):
  • Supporting all stages of in vitro plant production
  • Labelling and recording all processed samples
  • Handling large numbers of sterile cultures

Technology Discovery:
  • Cloning gene-editing constructs for plant transformation
  • Transforming banana tissue and regenerating plants
  • Genotyping to look for CRISPR editing (qPCR, Sanger sequencing, next-generation sequencing)
  • Analysis of sequencing data using bioinformatic tools

Molecular Biology:
  • Cloning: vector assembly, plasmid purification and making competent cells
  • Support other key cloning tasks, e.g., gene editing strategy design and optimisation
  • Genotyping: gDNA extraction, PCR, Sanger to characterise gene edited plant material
  • Support other key genotyping tasks, e.g., next-generation sequencing and data analysis

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

BSc (Hons) Laboratory Scientist Apprenticeship Standard:
  • A 'blended' learning approach with a series of intensive days delivered from the ARU Cambridge campus, supported with a combination of online learning

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

Progression opportunities within Tropic due to exposure to different areas of the business.
