What will the apprentice be doing?
  • The primary purpose of Trading Standards is to maintain a fair and equitable trading environment to ensure that consumers are protected, and reputable businesses can thrive
  • The postholder will be required to assist Trading Standards Officers in their day-to-day activities to enforce Trading Standards legislation through inspections, enforcement and project-based work
  • The postholder will provide administrative and back-office support to the Trading Standards team and other enforcement teams where necessary
  • The postholder will contribute positively to the completion of Key Objectives and Service Targets as defined by the current Trading Standards team business plans and to work within the overall vision, values, aims and objectives of the City of London Corporation

Main Duties & Responsibilities
  • To undertake the Level 4 apprenticeship training framework in Regulatory Compliance, complete any required records and successfully pass relevant assessments. The postholder will be expected to complete course work and assignments and work to successfully complete the Level 4 qualification
  • The postholder will be required to assist Trading Standards Officers in the performance of their duties. The role is extremely varied but is focused on the enforcement of a wide range of consumer protection legislation. The duties will include accompanying officers on inspections to business premises, contacting consumers on the telephone or in writing who may need help with problems they are having, and assisting with project-based work
  • To assist in maintaining accurate and timely records of inspections, visits and service requests, using current software on the Service database (calledUniform/IDOX)
  • To provide advice and information to consumers and businesses in line with current levels of knowledge and experience, helping consumers to achieve resolution so far as is possible
  • To respond competently to a wide range of issues arising from service requests, pro-active work, projects, partner enquiries and customer interaction. For example, in cases where problem businesses are generating large numbers of complaints, helping with the preparation and dissemination of consistent advice to help consumers
  • To carry out inspections, investigations and enforce relevant legislation in line with current levels of knowledge and experience, initially under close supervision from a team member.
  • To participate fully as a member of the team, contributing to the provision of an efficient service, including attending meetings, assisting in the preparation of information such as business advice, and developing both internal and external contacts and partnerships
  • To participate in the City of London Corporation's performance and development review process in order to help identify their own training and development needs
  • To maintain and develop professional knowledge to meet the demands of the post and to enhance professional development
  • Actively seek to implement the City of London Corporation's Occupational Health and Safety Policy in relation to the post, and at all times have due regard to the Job Title / Department / Trent No / Date relevant health and safety requirements when carrying out duties

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?
  • You will be supported to achieve the Regulatory Compliance Level 4 apprenticeship
  • Theoretical training will be delivered by the training provider on a weekly basis. Practical training and support will be given in the workplace allowing you to embed your learning in the working environment
  • You will receive 6 hours per week to completed course work within your working hours

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?
  • On successful completion of the apprenticeship, we aim to offer a permanent role within the team if a position is available. Alternatively, we shall endeavour to secure an alternative position within the City of London Corporation
