The Prime Minister's Office enables the Prime Minster to deliver the Government's overall priorities and to communicate the Government's policies to Parliament, the public and international audiences. From the Policy Unit and Press Office, Switchboard and Custodians, to the Events & Visits team and the world class Private Office support; the diverse Downing Street team draws on varied expertise from across the Civil Service and beyond. The teams come together to deliver excellent service to the Prime Minister while also making No10 a great place to work.

The Direct Communications Unit provides support to the Prime Minister and her team by recording and responding to correspondence from MPs, VIPs, external organisations and members of the public, ensuring that each receives an appropriate and high quality reply. We work across Government to represent the Prime Minister and Government policy effectively to the wider world.

The Cabinet Office - 10 Downing Street, are looking to recruit a vibrant, enthusiastic individual with a passion to learn, to undertake an apprenticeship within Business Administration. This is a unique opportunity for anyone interested in working at the centre of Government and providing a vital link between the Prime Minister and the outside world.

The role requires good communication skills, the ability to build relationships (both with other teams within No.10 and with colleagues across Government whose advice and input is often required). You will need to be proactive in your approach to work, identifying priorities and contributing to the smooth running and management of the Unit.

In particular, in this role you may have the opportunity to:

Work with other Government Departments to secure their cooperation, share best practice and foster a consistent approach to correspondence

Successful applicants will also be offered an exciting opportunity to work towards a nationally recognised qualification in Business Administration.

No.10 is a friendly and fascinating place to be, and the role provides an opportunity to see how it works and interacts with other parts of Government. You will be playing an important role in the way that the Prime Minister and Government are viewed externally and keeping the public informed.

Typically, the post will include some of the following duties:

Inputting information onto and maintaining databases;
Amending standard responses and drafting occasional replies to correspondence;
Dealing with telephone and written enquiries and requests from colleagues, staff in other government departments and members of the public;
Commissioning ministerial replies; briefings when necessary;
Ensure smooth running of the office by maintaining a filing and BF system
Maintaining good relationships with key stakeholders;
Assisting in research and planning activities for government policy;
Providing team administrative support such as ordering stationery, filing and photocopying.
Arranging School visits on a rota basis.


Candidates who pass the sift and interview stages will be posted into the Communications Officer role, graded at Band C.

Alongside your role, you will have the opportunity to work towards a Level 3 (A-level equivalent) qualification in Business and Administration.

Please note that this role requires SC clearance, which would normally require 5 years' UK residency in the past 5 years. This is not an absolute requirement but supplementary checks may be required where individuals have not lived in the UK for the required period. This may mean that your security clearance (and therefore your appointment) will take longer or, in some cases, not be possible.
