What you will do in your working day

We have an exciting opportunity to join our specialist business unit as an apprentice construction manager. We are looking to appoint highly motivated degree apprentices with strong aspirations to pursue a career within a leading UK civil engineering & construction organisation. Our civil engineering and construction works cover a wide range of engineering activities.

Our degree apprenticeship programme offers you the chance to secure a university degree debt-free, whilst gaining invaluable on-the-job experience. Your tuition fees for this degree will be paid for by Murphy and you'll also be earning a competitive apprenticeship salary.

Working as an apprentice construction manager you will learn how to be responsible for the daily control, management, and coordination of construction activities on site to ensure projects are delivered on time, on budget and to the required safety, environmental and quality standards.

Your responsibilities will increase throughout the duration of the apprenticeship programme as your skills and technical knowledge develop. You will be supported throughout by your assigned workplace mentor, in conjunction with your university apprenticeship tutor, to ensure you gain the right mix of skills and experience to successfully complete your apprenticeship.

Key responsibilities will include:
  • Working alongside our project engineers and construction managers to learn how to develop construction strategies and sequences
  • Analysing sketches and drawings to clarify construction sequences
  • Learning how to undertake concept design and site inspections of temporary works
  • Assisting in providing design and remedial solutions
  • Learning how to review and prepare risk assessments and method statements
  • Establishing and maintaining secondary dimensional control
  • Developing Knowledge of as-built surveys
  • Monitoring subcontractors to ensure compliance with method statements and inspection test plans
  • Assisting with quality control checks
  • Assisting package and construction managers with quality issues arising on site.

The training you will be getting
  • As part of this apprenticeship, you will follow the Construction Management Degree Level 6 apprenticeship standard which takes 5 years to complete with one of our partner universities. Through the apprenticeship you will work towards achieving a BSc (Hons) Construction Management degree which is validated by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB)
  • For this apprenticeship you will be based in our Stonecross Office, 1 Bridge Court, Yew Tree Road, Stonecross Business Park, Golborne, Warrington, WA3 3JD
  • You will however have to visit our construction sites regularly, and due to the remote locations of some of our sites, applicants must be willing to travel as required

What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship
  • Through the apprenticeship you will work towards achieving a BSc (Hons) Construction Management degree which is validated by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB)
  • You will have a permanent position at Murphy with further opportunity to develop your career
