Computing is essential to the science that STFC supports. We need a keen individual to support us in the development of new and existing IT services and systems. We are recruiting a Computing apprentice to work at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in south Oxfordshire. You will be based in the Particle Physics Department IT group with computing professionals.

About the role

During the apprenticeship scheme you will be exposed to a variety of IT, gaining a broad range of skills and experiences to support you as you work towards a BSc (Hons) Digital and Technology Solutions Degree.

You will develop your expertise in some of the following areas:

  • logging and resolving user IT issues/hardware/software/networking etc
  • making sure Sophos Anti-Virus is installed and running correctly on all device
  • self-learn WAMP, MySQL, PHP, HTML (bootstrap), Javascript to manage and develop custom databases (inhouse databases built by previous students.) 
  • self-learn SharePoint365 to manage departments SharePoint365 site
  • user guides
  • virtual machine Failover Cluster with SAN storage.

You will be expected to:

  • communicate with users, scientists, engineers and management to understand their requirements
  • take an active role in both technical and non-technical meetings
  • show initiative especially regarding learning new things
  • take responsibility for ensuring your work does what is needed and meets the quality   criteria specified
  • write documentation for technical and non-technical users
  • help deploy IT services to production and help provide support after release
  • present a topic to a small group of people and answer questions.

About you

You will have achieved a minimum of two A levels at grade A or above OR three A levels at grade C or above OR a BTEC Level 3 in Computing (or similar subject) or equivalent.

It is essential that you have good written communication skills as demonstrated in your cover letter.

A desire to develop personally and professionally is essential - your cover letter should explain why you have applied for this computing apprenticeship scheme and any activities you are involved in to help you develop personally and professionally.

some knowledge of and enthusiasm for computer programming and/or hardware is desirable but not essential - your CV and/or cover letter should give example(s) of personal or school projects that involved learning about and using IT and/or a programming language and/or hardware and what you enjoyed.
