The Apprentice General Farm Worker will learn to develop sales of farm produce, to look after the small pig enterprise and assist with all other operations on this mixed farm.

The roles training and responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • To develop the sale of meat from the enterprises. Initially to staff followed by on line sales to achieve greater margins than selling direct to an abattoir
  • To take control of the Pig enterprise and assist with the running of all livestock enterprises to gain knowledge and experience
  • To assist with the tidiness and appearance of the entire farm
  • To assist the maintenance of the farm and estate gaining a wide range of experience and knowledge from the operations
  • To assist with tractor work as required
  • Maintain a clean and tidy environment around all units
Requirements and prospects Desired skills
  • Good Communicator
  • Driving Licence essential
  • Tractor driving experience essential
  • Livestock handling experience preferable
  • Ability to manage a substantial workload and prioritise effectively

Qualifications required

Learners will need to have achieved a Level 3 qualification in Agriculture or similar subject before taking this qualification.

Future prospects May lead to permanent employment for the right candidate on completion of the apprenticeship. Successful candidates could progress onto a degree in Agricultural Management or similar qualification.

Things to consider Must be able to get to and from the place of work in a safe and timely manner. The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year. Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year. The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over. Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that's part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).
