NATS is a leading air navigation services specialist, handling 2.2 million flights in 2013/14, covering the UK and eastern North Atlantic. NATS provides air traffic control from centres at Swanwick, Hampshire and Prestwick, Ayrshire.

NATS also provides air traffic control services at 15 UK airports including Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Birmingham, Manchester, Edinburgh and Glasgow; at Gibraltar Airport and, in a joint venture with Ferrovial, at a number of airport towers in Spain.

Building on its reputation for operational excellence and innovation, NATS also offers aerodrome, data, engineering and consultancy solutions to customers worldwide, including airports, air traffic service providers and Governments.

The apprentices will be part of the teams that analyse and report on company safety performance, and set NATS future safety strategy.

The purpose of the role is to plan, execute, and report on assigned technical tasks. The successful candidate job holder provides specific scientific, technical or analytical expertise in one of these areas.

The successful candidates will in addition to being part of the teams in this area will be expected to bring the theoretical knowledge gained on the Apprenticeship to validate current practices and suggest improvements based upon latest academic thinking to the work of the department.

Desired skills

  • You will have the ability to produce well documented, high quality technical work, and judge when work is of a sufficient standard
  • Good communication and presentation skills to peers and managers

Personal qualities

  • You will be a clear thinker, who can work within a team, communicate with other team members and also work independently where required to a timescale

Desired qualifications

Good honours degree in a numerate subject (which could be scientific, technical, aviation or business oriented).

Things to consider

The posts are office based at our main office in Whiteley.
The Apprenticeship is at the University of Portsmouth. Attendance at the university is scheduled in blocks of several days across the year.

Our medical branch will test you for our general health and colour vision standards. You will need to be eligible to work in the UK and be able to successfully achieve security clearance.
