The school will appoint a trainee teacher to part-fill a teaching vacancy, with no more than an NQT's timetable ie with at least 20% of non-teaching time.

Usually, the trainee has a light timetable for the first months, increasing gradually. Teaching responsibilities are agreed with the school, and may involve some team-teaching. If the apprentice is supernumerary, they will learn to teach independently, even though a qualified teacher is timetabled for the class.

Training including courses, independent study, training meetings and lesson observations, will develop the apprentice'sskills at the same time as they are teaching. The assessment for QTS is taken before the end of the 12 month apprenticeship period.

Future prospects

Many former trainee teachers are employed as qualified teachers by the school in which they trained. Almost all (at least 95%) of e-Qualitas trainee teachers get teaching positions on gaining QTS each year. Those who stay in teaching tend to do very well, and move to positions of responsibility quite quickly if they so desire.

Things to consider

Whether teaching really is for you. Visit schools to find out before you apply.

The National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.70 an hour from the 1st of April 2018. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.

Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year. The minimum wage rates are £5.90 an hour for 18-20 year olds, £7.38 for anyone aged 21 to 24, and £7.83 for those over 25.

Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that's part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).
