Zircon Software is a small, but ambitious software company based in Trowbridge (Wiltshire), specialising in providing solutions to clients' software engineering problems, predominantly working in the road and rail sectors of the transport industry. For a small-medium size enterprise (SME), we work with some big clients!Siemens, Knorr-Bremse Group, Network Rail, Balfour Beatty and Transport for London, to name but a few of the transport industry giants.

We develop bespoke applications of various types, from Web based information systems to embedded real time control systems. Our work is engineering-based, as opposed to business/office IT systems, with an emphasis on Quality, particularly as many applications are safety related. Our engineers work mainly in C#, C++, C, Python and PHP on various Windows and Linux platforms, along with technologies, such as Django, OpenCV, Databases, ASP .NET, AJAX, WPF and XML, but other languages and technologies are employed as appropriate. You may not have experience of any or all of these (or even heard of them!) but that is something that you will get to learn along the way.

Tasks will be varied, but will include the following key tasks;
  • Work in a casual, friendly but professional environment

  • Be a vital member of the team on exciting and challenging engineering projects
  • Gain experience from knowledgeable co-workers
  • Provide valued input to the development of an expanding company
  • 25 days holiday, plus bank holidays and some extra days at Christmas

  • Working as part of a software development team on various stages of the software engineering lifecycle (requirements, design, implementation, testing)
  • Assisting with maintenance of the IT Infrastructure (Microsoft Server, Linux Servers, and various software tools and applications)
  • Training in software development, and various languages such as C#, C++, C, Python
  • Working within an Agile software development environment
  • Collaborating with the team and other stakeholders to achieve successful delivery of high quality software products
  • Developing software whilst studying to obtain a full honours Degree in Digital & Technology Solutions - Software Engineer Pathway
  • Regular day release to attend lectures and be a full participant at University Centre Weston

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • Experience with IT applications, such as Office, Word, Excel.

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Personal qualities

  • Have a good aptitude for problem solving
  • Have good communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Are a quick learner
  • Have an interest in software development and technology and be looking to pursue a career as a software engineer

Desired qualifications

  • You must be 18 years old or over to take up this position when it starts.
  • Applicants for this role should have GCSES (or equivalent) in the A*-C or Grade 9-4 range
  • We require you to have Level 3 qualifications such as A levels or BTEC National (or equivalent) in a relevant subject (i.e. math's, IT or another science).
