We are looking for an enthusiastic and talented person who has recently completed a degree in architecture (RIBA part 1) and wishes to complete their studies via the apprenticeship route in order to graduate as an ARB Registered Architect.

Candidates must be enthusiastic, good communicators and keen to develop their architectural skills and experience.

This post is a development role and explicitly for those that are studying for an Architectural Apprenticeship - Level 7. You will have a unique opportunity to gain architectural experience whilst studying part time towards an RIBA accredited Architectural masters degree at the University of Portsmouth.

The Service
  • The Design Team is a multi-disciplinary in-house design practice consisting of architects, landscape architects, structural engineers, project managers and quantity surveyors located within the Housing, Neighbourhoods and Building Service based at the Civic Offices in Portsmouth. We also work closely with mechanical and electrical engineers and building surveyors from our Repairs and Maintenance teams.
  • We have a diverse and varied portfolio of work and support the Council in the following sectors: Education (nursery, primary, secondary, further education and special needs), Housing (Local authority and supported living accommodation), Leisure, Culture, Planning, Landscape and the public realm. We also work for external clients such as Academy Trusts, NHS and other local authorities.

What is the role?
  • Initially you will be assisting our team in delivering a number of projects supporting the Council's Capital Programme; this would include contributing in the production of feasibility studies, preparation of presentation material, Planning and Building Control application documents and specification documents. Alongside part time day release study you will be gaining experience and working knowledge in all aspects of the design process.

  • A fully funded degree, training, practical work experience and support in order to develop you to become an ARB Registered Architect.
  • We are committed to helping you develop by providing a structured programme in conjunction with your studies at the University of Portsmouth. You will be spending at least 20% of your contracted hours learning away from the normal day-to-day work environment.
  • You will also be allocated a Senior Manager to act as your mentor throughout the entire apprentice process. They will provide overarching advice and guidance and ensure that you are getting the experience and support necessary to become an architect.
  • You will initially be supervised by a senior architect who will provide you with one to one assistance to quickly improve your knowledge and practical skills.
  • As you develop you will be given more responsibility within a project design team and your own workload.
  • We actively arrange CPD seminars to supplement your development.
  • Upon successfully completing your apprenticeship there are excellent opportunities within PCC for progression into the role of an architect.

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • Have the entry requirements to enrol on the University of Portsmouth Architectural Apprenticeship degree course (Level7) - degree in Architecture Part 1 exemption
  • Have basic CAD/BIM skills and a good working knowledge of all Microsoft packages
  • Have a basic knowledge of the RIBA's National Building Specification system
  • Have good presentation skills and a working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite
  • Have a broad but basic understanding of construction detailing for new works and in existing buildings
  • Have a basic understanding of the construction industry and the other disciplines involved
  • Have a basic understanding of the practice and business of architecture and an architect's Duty of Care and professional responsibility
  • Have a basic understanding of the principles of Health and Safety in an office environment and within the construction industry
  • Commit to identifying your own developmental needs and the obligation for Continued Professional Development (CPD)


Personal qualities

Desired qualifications

A good honours degree or above with Architects Registration Board part 1 exemption.

Students with appropriate qualifications and design skills may be accepted directly. An online portfolio submission may be required as part of the selection process. Applicants would ideally have some experience working within an architecture practice, though the course is available to recent Part 1 graduates.
