This role involves management of a range of routine lab support tasks as well as supporting lab scientists with a number of more specific/highly-skilled tasks across chemistry, molecular biology, microbiology and fermentation science, with a focus on the last two.

This role involves management of a range of routine lab support tasks as well as supporting lab scientists with a number of more specific/highly-skilled tasks across chemistry, molecular biology, microbiology and fermentation science, with a focus on the last two. The role requires independent work, work under supervision and as part of a team, and responsibility for a number of routine lab support tasks. The role requires both maintenance of detailed, high quality lab note books and careful time management.

Responsibilities and duties

1. Routine Lab Support Tasks

  • Maintenance of chemistry and biology glassware
  • Preparation of general use and tailored media; pouring agar plates
  • Waste management (chemical/ biological/sharps)
  • Regular deep clean of laminar and fume hoods
  • General organization of communal work space
  • Maintenance and preparation of key molecular biology stocks (antibiotics, molecular reagents etc.)

2. Chemistry, Microbiology and Fermentation Tasks

  • Preparation of solid and liquid media in shake flasks
  • Centrifugation and solvent extraction of bacterial cultures and DSP support
  • Inoculation of shake flasks and fermenters using aseptic technique
  • Preparation and operation of 7 L fermenters, eventual operation of 20 L fermenter

3. Molecular Biology

  • PCR
  • Gel electrophoresis
  • Genomic and plasmid DNA extraction from E. coli and actinomycetes
  • E. coli and actinomycete transformation
  • Restriction enzyme digestion of DNA
  • Restriction enzyme and restriction enzyme free cloning (e.g. Infusion)

4. Other Skills

Qualifications required
  • You should possess a minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) - grades A - C (9 - 4) including Science, Maths and English
  • You should have gained a minimum of 80 UCAS points from a minimum of 2 A-level subjects including either Chemistry or Biology - or equivalent, eg BTEC National Diplomas, IB or DVCE
