Russells Construction Apprenticeship Scheme

The Building Student Programme is structured to ensure that each candidate gains valuable experience around the different departments of the business during the first two years of employment. This rotation will see each candidate working alongside our Estimating, Quantity Surveying, Construction, Engineering and Design Management departments. At the beginning of the third year, each candidate will choose a preferred discipline and will be given the opportunity to specialise and work in one of the departments referred to above.

Building Students will undertake a day release apprenticeship degree at the University of Salford. The Building Student Programme at Russells has been developed in conjunction with the university and is therefore closely aligned with the degree course syllabus. Our partnership with the University of Salford is integral to the business, our staff regularly undertake guest lectures and students at the university visit our sites as a means of supplementing the construction degree courses.

On commencement of the Building Student Programme each candidate will be allocated an established member of staff to act as a mentor to provide guidance and support throughout the programme.

The day to day tasks a candidate can be expect to undertake include;
  • Completing "take-offs" and measurement exercise to assist pricing schemes.
  • Interfacing with Sub-Contractors to receive tender prices
  • Selecting and procuring Works Packages, placing Sub-Contract Orders
  • Checking Sub-Contractors Payment Applications and processing payments
  • Assisting in the compilation of Applications for Payment to Clients
  • Checking works on site to ensure requisite quality standards are met
  • Setting out & surveying works on site
  • Supervising Sub-Contract Works on site

Desired qualifications

Candidates must have sufficient UCAS points or satisfy the entry requirements for the University of Salford in order to qualify for the degree.

You will need to have GCSE maths and English at grade C/grade 4 or above. You will also need to have qualifications at Level 3 (A-level/BTEC) or equivalent. You will need the equivalent of 104 UCAS points (BCC) or relevant work experience that we can accredit.

Subject to successful completion, each candidate will be given the opportunity to pursue a successful career with Russells Construction with ongoing support to ensure that aspiring career goals and objectives are achieved.

Russells also support and encourage professional membership to the CIOB and the RICS. Russells Construction has developed a structured training programme for all candidates wishing to participate in the RICS Assessment of Professional Competence (APC).
