Media relations:
  • Understand how the media operates
  • Build relationships with the press (journalists, bloggers)
  • Deal with day-to-day enquiries from the media
  • Pitch stories to the media
  • Build and manage media lists for B2B (business-to-business) and B2C (business-to-consumer) clients using online PR software
  • Collate relevant press coverage online and offline
  • Manage all journalist requests through our distribution systems
  • Liaise with media for forward features and pitching ideaswhilst maintaining excellent knowledge of the publication

PR campaigns:
  • Research ideas for editorial pitchesand campaigns, identifying key themes and trends for the team to use in pitching and client management
  • Source ideas for features, events, round-ups, opinions and surveys, on behalf of our clients
  • Assist in the development of events for clients

  • Create copy for websites, marketing materials and press releases
  • Proof reading and editing all supplied copy to a very high standard, ensuring it is in keeping with the client's tone of voice

Research and data:
  • Research and update feature and event calendars for 2019 and 2020, identifying opportunities for clients
  • Maintain knowledge of trends and news in the Hospitality, Tourism and Leisure industries on a regular basis and provide information back to the team during meetings. Manage client and Custard databases, where necessary and adhering to data privacy regulations

Team support:
  • Support the account management team with PR activity and marketing plans by updating relevant awards, events and forward features
  • Manage general administration and communicate updates for client projects or campaigns, ensuring all work runs to deadline
  • Help with the monthly client reports, regularly checking against plans and attending internal account management catch ups
  • Attend meetings when required with clients, media and suppliers, and managing necessary meeting administration

Desired skills

  • Ideally someone with experience in a customer/client facing role
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. An enjoyment anda knack for making words on the page come alive is advantageous
  • Confident communicator at all levels
  • Skilled in IT,social media, and Microsoft Office packages,as many tasks will be done using email, Office and the social media platforms of today
  • Organised:the PR apprentice will be able to manage their time effectively, using initiative, and uphold a professional appearance
  • Have the ability to multi-task whilst paying excellent attention to the finer details

  • Flexible and willing to learn - everyday will be varied, so the apprentice will need to enjoy the adaptability of working in a fast-paced office environment.

Desired qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 A Levels or equivalent is desirable (agood qualification in English Language is essential)
  • GCSE: 9 to 4 (formerly A* to C) in English Language or equivalent
  • GCSE: 9 to 4 (formerly A* to C) in maths or equivalent

Future prospects

  • The 18-month programme does not begin until the official induction date onto the apprenticeship
  • Future employment opportunities may be available on completion

Things to consider

  • You will be required to work from Custard Communications office in Woking during work hours
  • You will also be asked to travel to events, exhibitions and meetings that may include overnight stays
  • Communicating with the team, media, clients and suppliers is a central part of the role, so the confidence to build relationships, network and develop professional relationships will be key
